1996 Speedster 717's, rebuilding carbs and was doing pop off test and got different readings from each carb Starboard-40@PTO, 44@Mag, Port-50@PTO, 46@Mag

Is it ok to have these different values on the carbs that feed one motor or should they be closer to matching?

Yep... what he said.

BUT... are those OEM springs, needles, and seats?? If they are... they are generally closer. If they are not... don't even bolt them back on the boat.

But then again... when you are dealing with the higher pressure carbs... then a few PSI is hard to judge.

I have read through your posts on carbs and have helped a ton, thank you! To answer your question...I have no idea, the PO had little clue, bought a Challenger as a parts boat for this Speedster. I did notice there were different color springs in two of the carbs and from what u have read that might be possible if needed to dial them in but all needle & seats as well as jets were as in the manual. The rebuild kits I purchased from OSD and they state the parts are Mikuni OEM but the kids cane only with new needle and seat, not springs. I have done the pop off tests with the springs that were in the carbs. So in your response I am reading best course of action is to obtain a new set of springs with hopes that will bring the pressure closer. From there would I be correct that you would change needle and seat up or down to dial in pressure? Is the intent for both carbs on each motor to be close to each other in pressure?

I'm not sure if you have a Mighty Vac. Mine only when to 30lbs so I bought a 60lb gauge off eBay and replaced my old gauge.
I would not take the Mighty Vac to 60lbs, but it works great up to 40lbs

So I ended up ordering new Mikuni springs in 80gr as per spec. and all new stainless screws for the inside (most were stripping anyway). Assembled first carb and pop-off tested at 49-50, swapped to the "gold" spring that op had in one of the carbs and tested at 40. Swapped back to the new spring and tested again and again got 49-50. All carbs assembled and one set is at 49-50 and the other set is at 48-48. Carbs are installed on port side and all cables reconnected. After a break I will be getting the starboard side together and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

Got the boat in the water yesterday and boy what a difference! Port side needs idle adjustment to bring it up to match starboard side but boat planed out fairly quick and had good top end.....
