95 SPX - Carb Springs

I have been rebuilding my carbs for my 95 657x, they are the sbn38 type 2 (long allen bolt mounting) and I took the carbs apart and had to wait on parts.

I goofed on reassembling, I am using the same springs that were in it already and noticed there is a shorter spring and a longer spring.

Are the pop off pressures supposed to be different for the pto and mag carb? Or are these springs not the correct ones. The carbs HAVE been torn apart prior to me....so I don't trust anything in there to be right.

Update : after messing with the pop off test I found I guess these were just bad springs or worn or not correct. The MAG carb didn't pop until almost 40psi and the pto carb was like 12! So I exchanged the springs and borough it within spec both needles releasing about 19psi. Idk what the hell the guy before me was doing. Now to throw them on and see if it runs!

Let me ask where did you get the carb rebuild kit from? Did it come with new springs? New needle and seat? Yes, those springs should be the same length. With them being different lengths I would definitely change the needle and seats and have a look at the main and pilot jets, To go back to Stock you should have 135 Main, 72.5 Pilot 1.2 needle and seat and spring part number 270500264 which unfortunately has been discontinued, do some research and see what you can find but after looking if you can’t find that spring I would try using 65 gram springs with everything mentioned above. You should be shooting for a pop off of 22 to 37 pounds. If you can’t find the original springs and use the 65 gram springs, take a pop off and see where you stand. If you need to lower pop off, I would try trimming just a little bit of the spring off of the end that sits in the carb body and re test pop off till you get close to 32 pounds.

What springs did you put on? What weight and where did you get them? 19 psi seems low for pop off
I didn't really have a way to measure I just kinda did the ol "that one feels lighter or stronger" squeeze test. FSM says 16-21 with pressure drop no more than below 12. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I just do what the big book tells me

What is FSM? If that’s the manual it’s usually wrong for pop off pressure.

Seadoo source is usually the go to, it does have the odd mistake but in this case I checked multiple threads and 32 is the optimum pop off with stock settings, stock jets. Do you know what size jets are in there? They could be wrong as the previous owner like you mentioned didn’t have a clue. give it a try but at 19 I think it will be loading up with fuel below 1/4 throttle

Weird that the factory service manual has different specs. The N/S are also showing to be 1.5s. I may have to dive back into it then
