I'm thinking about going with Full Bore to do my top end. Should I go with the Wossner, Pro-X, WSM, or Wiseco pistons? Any options out there for a reputable shop to bore and chamfer with OEM pistons?
I went with Dan @ Full Bore, and I am happy with the results. I put Pro-X in mine. Make sure you send the rave valves in with the jugs. You do not need the plastic part, just the valve.
Fullbore is fine and I have had them do work for me. From them the best to good.... OEM, Pro-X, WSM. I have no experience with Wossner and I would stay away from Wiseco for watercraft applications.
On all of my personal skis I buy OEM pistons and rings and send them to Group K in Arizona. They are probably the best machine shop for watercraft and only charge $100 to do both cylinders.
I just had FullBore bore my cylinders ('97 GTI with 717) and can tell you the machining it top notch and measures spot-on. He set them up for Wossner forgings. My mics tell me that the Wossners are quality parts.....at least the machining is. I hope to have it back together by this weekend and will post up the final results when I get it on the water.
My $0.02 is to stay away from forged pistons on watercraft. Not only is the setup very important but you have to make sure you warm them up very easy and good before getting on the gas. They expand at a much different rate than a cast piston and have gotten a bad reputation on watercraft because of this.
