out of oil

Hey guys I have a 2002 seadoo gtx di. Today after only 1.5 tanks of gas the ski went through 4 litres of oil. Any ideas? I don’t know anything about these engines. also it ran out of oil. now that i added more oil it still will not start. im thinking air has to be purged from the oil pump. am i close and can anyone tell me how to do it?
 
If you ran out of oil,,.and were running it,,,you may have no doubt seized the motor.
First, pull the plugs, see if one of them is gray,,,if so.,,you have scored that piston.
You can also pull the pto rav valve and look thru that port for scoring on the piston.
It is very unlikely that an oil line broke,,,but likely that the oil tank has a crack on the bottom. Usually the seems along the gas tank crack,,,and they slowly leak,, sometimes, the bottom seal where the oil line goes from the tank will leak,,,but it is also a slowish leak,,,but if you did not catch your slow leaks on time,,,no oil to the motor usually means engine trouble.
 
ok thanks. hoping i didnt screw it up too badly. if i didnt and all seems ok how would i bleed the air out of the lines to run it again?

IF you can get the engine started (assuming it is not seized) USING pre-mixed gas/oil then while running you can manually hold the oil pump lever in the full open position and the oil should start feeding it's way from the pump to the carbs.....this is much easier to observe if your oil lines are new (3/32" Tygon).

I'll assume you have resolved any OIL leakage/tank leakage problems (as previously stated -> seams checked for cracks, gasket and fitting in oil tank bottom is not leaking, etc)....if you LOST that much oil that fast....was the ski an oily mess in the bottom of the hull (that's indicative of an oil leak and/or you should have seen an oil slick following behind you as the bailers pumped the oil out of the hull - although there would still be an oily residue everywhere inside the hull).
 
Do a compression check on both cylinders and tell us what you find.

If the compression is low from lack of oil you are going into the motor.

DO NOT premix a DI ski.
 
My 97 Speedster was running through a gallon of oil per tank of fuel. Turned out to be a leak in the tank at the bottom bolt hole, where the tank attaches to the hull.

Wouldn't you lose oil from the leak whether the ski was running or not? I would think if you let it sit for a week or so, the oil tank would be empty.

tank is now fixed as the seams were leaking so a non issue now. Now the problem is running on a hose but not in water and if it does run it dies out in seconds or when given gas. just looking for proper steps to test compression so i can rule that out hopefully
 
Take both plugs put, ground caps on the grounding stud, turn over engine while holding at full throttle. Compression should be around 120 to 135. There should be no more than a 10psi difference between cylinders

You are right. I went out this morning and all the oil is gone. Can I fix the leak by making the grommets tighter somehow, or am I just going to have to buy new ones. Both of the grommets are a little loose, so they leak.
 
I will check compression. I got the left engine to fire, but died after a few seconds. A little water came out of the exhaust. I fired up the right engine just fine. It also had a little water sputter out of the exhaust but ran fine after that.
 
I did a compression test on each cylinder on each engine. I removed one spark plug at a time, attached my compression tester, and recorded the psi as follows:

Left engine (turns over but does not start)
rear cylinder 20 psi
front cylinder 70 psi

Right engine (starts and runs)
rear cylinder 80 psi
front cylinder 80 psi

I tried to find the compression numbers for the 717 Rotax engines in the SeaDoo manual, but did not find anything. I'm not even sure I did the compression tests correctly. I am not familiar with 2 cycle Rotax engines.
 
Those numbers are extremely low,,top end rebuild low...thats why they won't fire or run.

Please start your own thread. I was just reading thru here and got completely confused then realized you weren't the original poster to the thread. I wondered why Mik was talking about DI compression numbers yet you said you check both engine. Just got a little confused. LOL, been a long day.....
 
Sorry, but I am not very "expert" on finding where you start new threads. I've started a couple, but can't remember how I did it.
