Oil change

I know people like to flame others for not using the search, but I tried it first. It didn't help. I went through about a dozen threads that came up in the search and none of them had the info I need....

I'm trying to figure out what oil I can use in my 2008 Speedster? Supercharged.

I was gonna get some good quality 10w-40 but wanted to make sure first. I used to use Yamalube 10w-40 in my waverunner that was SC.
 
In my Seadoo I use only Castrol 4T motorcycle oil SAE 10W-40. The owner and mechanic of Jet Trenz where I get my Challenger serviced only uses this oil. Works just fine and a lot less expensive than Sea Doo oil. I do my own oil changes now but use Jet Trenz for stuff that is over my head or beyond my ability.
 
I've been getting the Seadoo 4 stroke maintenance kit for years. $65 bucks gets you everything you need: 1 gal of oil / filter/"O" rings/and new plugs. This site won't let me post a link but they're readily available on amazon or ebay.

Do the same thing but put my own kits together. Filter with 'O' rings 11.99 each on Amazon. Free shipping when you combine plugs and oil filters. Castrol 4T (mineral motorcycle oil) on sale at Advanced Auto $2.99/quart 4 quarts $11.96 and I buy by the case. Spark plugs NGK DCPR8E 10 plugs $28.50 Amazon. 3 plugs times $2.85 = $8.50 for new plugs. This brings the grand total for oil change and tune up $32.45 and I don't have to buy my supplies yearly. The savings are about half of what you pay for the kit or $32.55. Call me cheap but I'm not paying someone $32.55 to do some thing I can do in 5 minutes on my computer and have a three year supply. Plugs, oil and oil filters with 'O' rings don't spoil like food.

Here is what your manual states.

Do NOT use full synthetic, not good for the SC.
The part number in the top of the picture is NOT for your engine, it is for the 155 which can use synthetic,

Its a valid strategy. For me, though, I'm not going to spend $30K on a boat and get spun up over $70 of materials for two engines per year. I'd rather buy the kit and have dealer parts.

I just stated how I perform tune ups. I guess I have maybe 18 grand in my Doo. It works for me. Obviously my program is not for you. Like they say, "have it your way", my friend.

I'm not semi-hot about an oil change nor angry. There are more ways to skin a cat. As a matter of fact my first oil change on my Sportster years ago, I purchased a kit that also contained an round hand oil extraction pump, one gallon of SeaDoo oil and SeaDoo oil filter and 'O' rings from Watercraft Superstore in Clearwater,FL. The hand pump today still works like it was new. I just do it slightly different today.

The three 'O' rings seal the oil inside your engine which help prevent oil leaks. I read that it is not necessary to install new 'O' rings with every oil change but for a few bucks extra I change them on every tuneup.

Sorry, i didnt mean to imply that people were getting upset or angry. I meant that this turned out to be a really good thread with a lot of replies.

Thanks for the O ring info, but i was wanting to know where exactly they go?

Also, since i have people's attention on this subject.... Do i need to 'level off' the boat? Meaning, how do i get the engine in the boat level so i dont overfill or under fill the thing? I really just need a reference point as i raise or lower the trailer wheel stand.

When doing the oil on my waverunner i would level out the trailer itself since the ski sat on it level. Geez, i hope that question made sense. Thanks again guys!
 
The o-rings are used to seal the top oil filter "cap". You will see them as soon as you unscrew the. Oil filter lid from the housing.

On my challenger 210c the deck sits level on the water. I use my iPhone level to make sure it's close to level.

Manufacturer says replace 3 O rings but kit's usually only come with 2. They are different sizes so pay attention to where the different sizes are when you remove the filter cap. I always wet the new O rings with a finger of oil so they swell up and seal well. The third is a small O ring that goes on the bolt that holds the cap on. I have been reusing my original for years w/o a problem but I need to find a new one. And yes, be careful not to overfill. There are threads on here(kustom Karl) that explain in great detail how to do the change, it's a piece of cake and HUGE savings over what dealers charge! Happy Boating!

Sorry. I didn't intend to imply that I changed mine on the water. What I meant to say was: I checked to see if my deck was level when I was on the water. It was. So, now, I just adjust the trailer jack to get the deck level, then proceed with the oil change. I use my iPhone to check for level.

They should be gaped already but doesn't hurt to check the gap. The manual says NGK DCPR8E Gap 0.7-0.8 mm (.028 to .031 in)

I change my oil in the fall as part of the winterization process. I save the new plugs in the kit, though, for the second ride of the next season. I fog the engine when winterizing, and I don't want to risk fouling the brand new plugs on that first start of the next season as the fogging oil burns off.
