Oil Change

How hard is it to change the oil on a Speedster 200? I'm about 30 minutes short of our 10 hour but I figure I'll change it now before we hit the lake next. I've got the filters and the oil but I'm somewhat curious because it's a boat so there is no access to the underside of the engine and a drain plug. I was trying to follow a manual but it's for a Jetski and I can't figure out the pictures all that well. I'd rather not have our dealer do it since it's painfully obvious to me that they are completely incompetent.

pwirch,You need an oil siphoning pump.I picked one up at the dealership.You can buy one at your local auto parts store for under $50 I'm sure. They have a small diameter hose you stick in the dipstick tube and a discharge hose to pump into a container.I'm sure Karl will chime in and explain the step by step procedure.better yet search the words" oil change "and you'll get the all the info:cheers:

Warranty........

Usually, you are required to bring the boat in for it's 10 hour service. This is because the dealer that sold you the boat, wants to make sure that the oil has no signs of shavings from bearings etc....

Or so that's what they are suppose to do. We all know and have debated the fact that they only want your money and are only changing the oil.

But, you have to look at the legal stand point of this too. If your boat is under warranty and you change the oil yourself. Then, next month, you blow the engine for some un-foreseen reason; guess what? Your buying a new engine.

The dealers defense in denying your claim will be that you didn't bring the boat in for them to inspect it at the 10 hour service. They'll contend that if you did, they would have found the shavings from a bad bearing....blah, blah, blah....and the judge will probably side with them.

So, I think I'd read between the fine lines of your warranty and see, if you do the work yourself, will this release them from all potential damage in the future. :cheers:

My dealer told me that there was no problem warranty wise if I did the regular service myself (oil, filter, etc... - just keep receipts) but that I should take it to a dealer for the 10 hour service. He said that if there were any issues that were going to come up that they would probably be caught by the dealer at the 10 hour service. That plus the fact that my manual came with a special page that is supposed to be signed by the dealer when they do the 10 hour service led me to believe that I was probably covering my butt if I got a dealer to do the 10 hour service. It ended up costing me just under $200.

Probably just more of the lunacy at my dealer. They are the ones who pushed the sale of the filters and oil on me and said it was no big deal and if I could change the oil in my car I could do it in the boat. They said that I could bring it in and have them do it but it really wasn't all that hard. It wasn't until later that I realized there was no way to drain the oil. I have that page in my manual as well. Maybe I'll track down a different dealer and see what they say and can do about it. Argh.

Here is all the info to change the oil in a 4-tec engine. Changing the oil on a 4-tec engine…all models

Here is the info on the oil change. If you still need info let me know. I own a 200 speedster 310 hp.
Here are the part numbers you need to change the oil and filter in ALL 4-tec engines.
(3) "O" rings
1)420320920-$7.25
2)420850500-$8.99
3)420950860-$2.20

Oil filter /I use a K&N off their website.
1)KN556-$12.95

Oil 10w40 Mineral Oil from seadoo#219700346-$6.50 a qt.
Be sure you use 10w40, marine 4 stroke Oil, with a API of SL, SJ or SN.
You need 3 L or 2.7 us quarts with filter for oil change.

Oil extractor from West Marine. Company Tempo, Part# 170200 Model# OB5 Retails about $50.00.
Change the oil when it is warm. Remove the oil filler cap and the dipstick. Insert the extractor tube in the dipstick 18.7 inches from the top of the dipstick pipe. Wrap tape around the tube to be sure it is in that deep. Next, extract the oil from the dipstick. (on pwc models only, the next step applies)When no more oil is extracted, pull the tube out of the dipstick hole and crake the engine(do not start) while the engine is in drown mode(fully depress the throttle lever, or on Jet Boats grab the throttle cable linkage at the throttle body and HOLD it open than crank the engine, get a friend to help)
Crank the engine for 10 seconds, Extract oil again, repeat crank extract 2-3 more times.
Keep track of how much oil you extract and add what you removed.

You will need a E-10 star socket or a 8mm(6pt) socket to remove the oil filter cap. There are 3 "O" rings in the filter cap area if they are damaged change them. Check level, and go have fun. I hope this info helps.

Thats cause dealers are salesmen,and don't have a clue about what they sell.The manual says first oil change at 10hrs and "recommend" the dealer does it,even has a place in the manual for them to sign off on the service.I personally don't buy in to this "dealer must do the 10hr oil change"you can easily do it yourself and know you didn't screw anything up doing it
If your not comfortable doing it yourself any seadoo dealer can do it

If the dealership says you can change it, then I'd buy the oil extractor and do as Karl has posted. But,.........I'd get that page in my book signed off first, just to CYA!.........
Your going to eventually want to maintain this boat yourself, so the more you learn now on these components and how to service them, the better off you'll be in the future.
