I was just given a 1998 GTX Seadoo with trailer by a friend. He said he rolled the ski over and could not start it after that. That was two years ago. Surprisingly enough, it is in great shape. I pulled the spark plugs out and found water in the cylinders. I sucked the water out with a shop vac and sprayed some WD-40 into the cylinders. I never expected the engine to crank, but low and behold it did. I blew the remaining liquid out of the cylinders and installed new plugs. I attempted to start the engine with a little quick start sprayed into the carbs and it kicked. Amazing. I think the carbs need to be removed, cleaned and reinstalled because gas seems to be pouring into the cylinders. I will be doing that tomorrow.
Any other suggestions to get it up and running would be greatly appreciated.

I'm amazed this thing starts. You should check the compression. Was it saltwater intrusion or freshwater in the engine? Rust has to have set in on the bearings, crank, and piston rings by now. Curious to see what kind of performance you will get out of it in its current condition. Definitely rebuild the carbs.

150 compression is ideal, so your basicaly perfect! Be sure to get that carb cleaned/rebuilt.. keep us posted as to how it runs once u get it in the water

Cleaned the carbs over the weekend, and to my surprise the ski started for 45 seconds with the fuel lines disconnected. We noticed one of the valves was stuck in the midway position. We removed and cleaned both valves , but noticed the belows had to be replaced. I'll be ordering them tomorrow. The saga continues!!!

Changed the bellows - started the jet ski - it ran with a lot of smoke. Don't know if it's blowing the residue from the engine. Any thoughts???

Tried to run the ski today and it wouldn't turn over. I removed the driveshaft and put a wrench on the flywheel and attempted to turn the engine manually, which I did. I again tried to start the engine and it turned over. It seems to have a dead spot and when it reaches that spot it won't turn until I past that spot manually. Also, when I move the engine approximately three inches either way, I hear a cluncking noise???? Is that noise common or is that normal for the ski??

You're talking about this engine like it is in prime condition, it is not normal for an engine to sit filled with water for 2 years. There is probably corrosion build up on the crankcase and rust build up on the crankshaft and bearings. The rough spot is probably due to bearings having rusted in place and creating pits in the bearing surfaces. You need to tear this motor down and inspect and replace the necessary parts before you intend to jump on it and ride away.

I may ultimately have to do that. Do you think it would be cheaper to break down the engine risking breaking bolts and such or replacing the engine itself. If it's the latter, how much would you think an engine for this particular ski would cost??

Wow can anyone say dejavu? I have a 97 gtx 787 that seems to have a few problems. Mine starts out just like the one mentioned above. water in the cylinders dess won't crank. Only getting one beep emptied out the cylinders tonight with fresh motor oil and the a berrymans b-12 bath then more oil. after this i ran compression 160 on the front cylinder and get this 200 on the rear!! Who would have thought. Lord only knows how long it's been sitting like this. Probably a while (years). my dess is only beeping once and when i try to start doesn't crank but gives me a HI~temperature readout on the info center. any ideas? I tried the start button five times after reading on the forum and it doesn't do anything. I would really like to get some use out of this ski but don't know much about them. Any and all help I would greatful for and very much appreciated. thanks a bunch 97gtxowner AKA (AJ):ack:

Well believe it or not the ski runs perfectly. I guess all the residue from sitting for two years is gone and the machine starts right up. Also, I rechecked the compression and it's 150psi in both cylinders, go figure. Now for the question, when it's running it sounds like something is spinning in the back of the ski. Is that a normal sound???
