Hello, I purchased a 2002 Sea Doo XP and I know very little about these toys. Here is the scoop... A neighbor lost her house to foreclosure and had to sell a few items. I made her an offer on her Sea Doo and she accepted ($600) :+).

I feel very lucky because I always wanted one of these, just didn't have the cash to get one. I found my opportunity to own one very cheaply and jumped right on it. She claimed that she only used it a few times and only in a lake. This thing looks pretty new except for a few minor scratches on the bottom. It looks like she bought it, took it out a few times and then just left it in her driveway under a cover. It looks a bit weather beaten but I think with some conditioning, I can get her to look sharp again.

There is a small problem I think. First off, I still have not started it. The battery was dead and would not hold a charge. I still need to get a battery for it. Now here is the scary part, the engine compartment had approx 1 gallon of something. It looks like water and oil. I don't see a separation of oil and water so maybe it is gas and oil or maybe just oil. I don't know. As I brought her home, she was leaking this fluid from a drain hole in the rear. Somewhat thick stuff. Has the consistency of car engine oil.

Some guidance from someone knowledgeable would be very much appreciated. I'm a college student and have no idea where to start with this. I hope this is not a big problem. Maybe it's just a hose that needs reconnecting? I have no idea!

The woman I purchased it from said that she took it out last October and she is claiming that it ran very well and she never had a problem with it. She speaks very little english so I told her that I will give her the $600 and take the baby to it's new home with me. She didn't hesitate to take the cash.

So, with all being said, where do I begin with my new purchase?

Hi and welcome to the SeaDoo forum.

Since you didn't put in your profile what part of the country you're from, I'm assuming (might be a big assumption) that you either live where the ski doesn't need to be winterized or the ski was winterized. So was the ski winterized properly or did it not go below freezing where you live?

First thing I would do is drain all the crap from the hull, then spray some Castrol Super Clean or Purple Power and clean out the hull so it's not so nasty to work on.

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully this will be a good purchase for you. Do you know if the engine is locked up? Can you turn it over with the PTO? I would do the following:

1) Drain the oil and gas tanks.
2) Clean out the engine compartment.
3) Get a new battery for the machine.
4) Test the compression.

I am sure others will chime in with some good steps to take. Follow these ideas then come back with what you find. Good luck. What part of the US do you live? Would she have run the XP in salt water?

I'm in Burbank California. No freezing weather out here.

I will definitely clean out the hull this weekend. Thanks for your message.

follow toro's advice, and also look at the fuel lines, are they grey or black (black good, grey is bad)

purple power and a pressure washer will work wonders on the inside of the hull, park it on an incline, or lift up the front of the trailer, squirt a bunch of purple power (5bux wallmart) and wash/buff for outside, or maybe wet sand it if its very rough....
