New to me 95 SPi

My wife and I were just gifted a 95 SPi. What's y'all's opinion on the this year/model?
What should I start working on to get it ready for the upcoming season?
I was told that it doesn't like to start after sitting through the winter and that it randomly starts sometimes when it's beached/docked.

Start with a compression test. If that checks ok move on to the fuel system. Replace all of the grey tempo fuel lines with 1/4" black automotive line. Clean and rebuild your carbs with OEM parts. Clean or replace your fuel selector. Check your water seperator and make sure the o ring seals and is not hard and cracking.

For the compression test.. Fuel off, cold engine, plugs grounded throttle wide open. Take 3 readings

For the fuel line, you will need 20-25 ft of 1/4" line.

The grey tempo lines break down externally and cause all kinds of problems in the fuel delivery system.

Good info so far. The Grey Tempo lines will DESTROY the engine if you have them as it creates a lean condition. So you get fuel but not enough lube.
 
The 95 Spi is a fun little ski. It doesn't have too much power, it's alittle unstable, but a blast to play around on. You will enjoy it. Just make sure you do the maintenance on the fuel system before riding

Also, drain the oil tank, replace the oil filter and refill with the correct oil for your Seadoo.

Thanks for the quick responses.
I'll hopefully pick up a compression gage in the upcoming week and get back to you on the numbers.
Is planning on changing the fuel lines anyway to cope with the wonderful E gasses California if forcing on us.

What is the MPEM?

I have heard of a ski starting by itself sometimes, once the lanyard was attached. it turned out the guy just replace the little red start button and installed it too tight.
He put the outer edge of it under the "insert" instead of just laying it in on and make sure it "clipped in".
He put a small hole in the new one when he installed it and basically we ruined it when it was removed.....good thing he had an extra one for other ski that didn't quite need it yet.
 
The cover on the start/stop button is gone. So it may just be water in the switch causing the random starts.

MPEM is the main electrical controller, and feeds the 12v to the solenoid when it sees the teather and the start button. Over the years theres been a handful of people reporting coming home to a cranking or running seadoo in the garage or the driveway.

I can see where its possible it could be the start button, but from prior threads its usually the MPEM.

Over the years theres been a handful of people reporting coming home to a cranking or running seadoo in the garage or the driveway.

whoa! that would suck! especially when gone all day and the come home to a roasted engine and drive train. or worse!
can this happen without the dess plugged in?
probably a good idea to disconnect the battery when not in use.
 
Yes it can...although knowing how the MPEMs work I would assume they would not have ignition unless a key is on the post.

I'd say Ive read about it 5 times in the last 10 years so its a uncommon issue. Usually there is no warning it just happens though.

I had one weird over the summer...a DESS MPEM that would not try to see the key unless I "woke" up the MPEM by hitting the start stop before I put the key on.
 
I degreased and halfway cleaned the insides of her today and installed my battery tender lead.

I also found that she ran all summer and want having any issues so I'm going to skip the compression test for the moment.

It was freaking cold (for South Carolina) so I didn't tear into the electrical system yet. I'll wait for slightly warmer weather.

Also discovered that the tether using in the... Trunk?... like I was told so I'll have to call and track that down.

Random Question of the Day: Where do you guys keep your registration and insurance cards?

I'm in Augusta GA across the river. Got down to 12 degrees last night. Same tonight!! That's crazy cold for GA

I would still check the compression. It's good to know the condition of the engine in a new to you ski. You will want to know if it's tired, healthy, or you're on borrowed time.

Mine are winterized and stored in my heated garage. It definitely got down cold enough here for a few days to do some serious damage if not winterized
 
I'm working on getting the SPi ready for the warmer weather (if it ever decides to get here), I picked up some XPS jet pump oil, 2-stroke oil, and a battery.

The battery is where my current issue arises. It happens to have the stupidest post design ever thought up for a battery (see image).
Each post has a square nut that has to be held in place while a bolt with the cables is screwed into it.
I managed to drop both nuts and of course they both ended up under the engine. I tried flushing them out with both air and water. No luck.
Any tips?
