Hi everyone! Been reading in this forum for a while, always been interested in marine 2 strokes and thanks to alot of the input on here recently purchased a pair of 96 xp's! The one runs great, but the other is giving me a little trouble...

We bought the pair knowing the second one needed some work, but I'm at a loss now. I just put a new battery and starter in and got the engine to crank, but not fully turn over. I then removed the plugs and cranked until no more oil spewed out, (been sitting for about a year) and reinstalled the plugs with the same result, crank but no full turn over. With the plugs out, it cranked as it should then reinstalled, it only does about a half crank.... Even if the crank seals are bad, shouldn't it still give a full crank after draining the oil? Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes, it does. With the plugs out I can hit the ignition button and it cranks as it should, rapid with full crank. I did some more Google digging, is it possible I still have to draw the oil up from the lower end via a vacuum (finger over plug holes) and crank it?

OEM or after-market starter?

Check voltage at battery, when you hit starter it should drop some, but not like down to 8v.

Check big cables to starter, wiggle them around, if you feel crunching while moving them, replace them.

Feel cables after attempting to start, hot cable/connection indicates bad connection. Bad connection says not enough current getting to starter.

Check/tighten big cables both at starter and at solenoid. Likewise battery to solenoid.

Outside possibility is that there is poor connection inside solenoid.

Generally, cranking with plugs out (taking note of the post where a member sprayed oil all over his garage ceiling when he did not cover the plug holes with rag before doing this) should blow out enough of the oil to get the beast started ... the smoke screen will dissipate and you do not want to run it for more than 30sec to 60sec.

Good luck and welcome to the best SeaDoo forum.

It's an aftermarket starter. The starter sounds solid and feels like it has enough booty on it to turn this monster over. I'm starting to think that there is some oil on the bottom side that needs to be drawn up since it's been sitting so long. All the connections are solid and wiring all checks out. The previous owner didn't know a spark plug from a broom handle, but the owner before him (original owner) seems to have known how to take care of his machines. The engine bay is still white lithium coated and all the connections are lubed and coated. I'm really hoping that once this monster is running that all the skeletons will be out of the closet.

I was thinking along the lines of a syringe with a rubber pool plug on it may be a road worth traveling... I'll post a pic if it comes down to that.. in the mean time I may just call upon my uncle (partner owner) to stick his finger in the hole lol

Does the battery CCA rating matter alot on these too? The aftermarket batteries that are installed have a 220cca rating, is that too low?
