just bought a 96 spx and a 98 gsxl on a trailer got the gsxl running but i need help on the spx. i think maybe the pump is messed up somehow but im unsure... with the plugs out i can turn the motor over with the starter no more then about 10 sec and the cylinders will fill with oil?? enough oil to shoot 20 feet in the air. where do i start?? thanks a bunch

This is not good news, you probably have leaky crank seals. Try pinching off the feed line to the rotary valve when the ski is not in use, it might get you through the season, but you're ready for a major rebuild or a rebuilt short block.

The oil injection pump runs full-on if the cable isn't connected. Have you checked that? I wouldn't think it would allow as much oil in as it sounds like you're seeing, but you never know.

The rotary valve shaft is lubricated by the 2-stroke oil as well. Maybe the crank seals for that are shot.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

thanks guys, i will look tomorrow i thought maybe the previous owner put oil in the cylinder to free the motor so i took the head off and cleaned all the oil out. but today when i put it all back together it was spewing oil agian... the pistons looked to be in good shape and no scoaring on the cylinder walls but im just not sure if i want to rebuild it or not.

I bought a gsi a while ago and it had a ton of oil in it from sitting for 3 years...
it took all day of turning it over to get the oil out .I got all of it out and it has been out over 20 times in the past couple of months no prob at all.

get all of the oil out get it running and go from there ...good luck

Yeah you need to keep cranking without the plugs in untill all the oil is out. Clamp your RV line and mark your oil tank. The crankcase fills up with oil from sitting with the bad seal. The mark on the tank will give you an indication of how much made it into the case and how long it took. If the ski sat a long time before being started it could be a slow leak that can be dealt with for awhile before a rebuild.
