Thanks, but I realize that now and it's too late! I'm not popping the 5A fuse like everyone else, is it the diode in the mpem even if the amp isn't burning out?

I have the same question. I think that I have a bad MPEM, but my 5amp fuse is not blown. (None of my fuses are blown and I have a good ground and good battery and get no gauge activity or beeps or turnover. It just acts totally dead. I'm wondering if replacing the diode might solve the MPEM problem rather than buying a new MPEM. Thank you

Thank you for your quick response! Recently I replaced all gray fuel lines and rebuilt carb and fixed bogging surging issue (Thanks to this forum). I have checked the 15 Amp fuse in the rear e-box and it is good, however when I opened up the rear e-box it was full of water. B/c last weekend someone forgot to put the plugs in. I test after the 15 amp fuse in the rear e-box and with the digital multilmeter and I have 12.6 volts at the starter(?) I am assuming this is the starter b/c i can touch a screwdriver to the bolt with 12.6 and jump it across to the other side and the motor tries to turnover. The ground cable on the front of the motor (attached to the magneto) is also good and corrosion free and attached well. Thank you for your help

I just replaced the Diode for my 97 GTi MPEM.. now all works great.. except the Beeper.. can't hear it.. anyone know where I can get a new beeper in Canada? part#? Also what should I use to SEAL the Hole I made to find the Diode? Silicone ???

See Sticky at forum top
Silicone is fine. Next time easy access. Moisture out.

bhuffman, Clean all connections & apply dielectric grease. pay more to coil.

having issues with my 5amp fuse blows the second I install it. never did try jumping with another vehicle but someone forgot to check the plugs before they went into the water and flooded them. the electrical box in the rear near the battery was full of water. after some time traced it to the Mpem and found this thread. naturally I just tried to replace the diode but the ones I recieved dont have a directional arrow on them. Is this diode the reason my 5 amp fuse is blowing or is there another underlying issue. if so how do i determine which way to put in the new diode?, trial and error. any and all help would be great.

Jwwhiz, mine didnt have an arrow either, but there was a white band that went around the diode. I set it where the band was on the "north" side of the board. so if you're looking at your board- your rectifier -square part with screw in center is on the left- the fuses on the right. Just like the original picture.

thanks I did have it in backwards. I guess the one I removed the letters were upside down so I put the new one back in the same way. I will get it in and give it a shot. I am a bit of an ameture in this field, never soddered something so small before, or ever on a circuit board before. Is the connection actually made below where you slide the prongs in or is through the metal rings that you actually sodder to. When I was removing the old one I accidentally removed all the old sodder with it, hope it still works out. I will be sure to let you know how it goes.

Yes. See post # 21 on this thread @ 3rd picture. Thats where mine were soldered.

Hey everyone thanks for the help. We have a 97 GSI, blowing 5 amp and we changed the diode in the mpem and that fixed it cuz it started right up. but now the power seems to be itermintent, sometimes when we put the key in it beeps twice gauges work and starts right up and sometimes its like they is no power to anything let it sit for a while and it might start and i really cant figure out why that is. We really havent figured out how to get it to start consistantly we have checked both ground wires by the stator. Any ideas?

I just tried it again with the key out pushed the start button 5 times and nothing... all fuses are good on mpem

hello, can someone tell me or show me where is the bad diode located on an XP97 mpem , the mpem number is 278 001 078 ?

Awesome.
I have a 2000 GTI with the 5amp fuse issue, ordered the diode last week pulled the MPEM apart and replaced the diode. Fixed it took it out and ran it for about 2 hours ran great.
But, and there always seems to be a but, I have no beep no red light on the fuel gauge, fuel gauge desnt work and neither does the speedo. I push the start button and it fires right up. I have checked all the fuses and connections. Any body got any ideas. Fuel gauge has a new float in it so I know thats good. Is there a fuse somewhere in the harness I dont know about. Or is it something in the MPEM since I did the diode repair.
This thread and forum is awesome so much advice and information thanks for all the Help..

hi all,
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreaciated. I dont know if I have this diode proble. I do not have any blown fuses either. sometimes when we put the key in the post, it beeps twice gauges work and starts right up but after a coupple of seconds the engine dies, and I can no longer start it up, its like there is no power to anything let it sit for a while and it might give me 2 beeps and start and it might not. Somethimes I get 2 beeps and most og the time I get no beeps. i really cant figure out why that is. I dont want to put it in the water like this. I really havent been able to figure whats wrong, the post? I read that its either good or bad... but in the mornings I get connection and Im able to crank the engine for a few seconds. BTW I just recently had the strarter changed, and the mechanic told me that changing the strarter has nothing to do with my new issue. But before I changed the starter the electrical dess system was never an issue. anybody have any ideas?
Much appreciate it.

Y'all both need to start your own threads, this is a very old thread and I doubt you'll get many responses.
