Finally got a couple minutes to take the cylinders off, and found what think is what I originally thought...the wrist-pin retainer failed and let the piston go.

Unless someone has a better idea of what caused this?

The wrist-pin sounds like a very good probability.

And WOW if you're going to break something you may as well do it right! Great pictures.

I would have guessed that it lost oil and seized in the cylinder, and just ripped the wristpin out, but the piston slid right out of the cylinder and had a nice coat of oil still on it after 3-4 weeks of sitting there.

There was surprisingly little scarring of the cylinder. But when the pin came out, it grabbed the bottom of the cylinder sleeve and ripped a chunk out of it, then pieces went flying all over the place.

Hey scoop...when reinstall'n/assembl'n, the pistons..etc, the wrist pin clip, is positioned in one way, or else thats what happens....

I bought this from Kustom Karl, and I don't think it was rebuilt ever. So I guess the retainer just traveled to the wrong place and cratered...

OMG...that engine is a pile of junk! I Don't think the owner before me had any thing major done to it. I called the original selling dealer who sold it, and they told me just minor things like wear ring and such...No tear down ever and they were the only servicing dealer as they were close by to the owner.

I am pretty sure it never had engine work on it. The bolt heads were all still coated with paint. Doesn't look like it had ever been cracked open.

It looks kind of like the engine I bought off ebay all factory never been into. I would excpect to have to do work to all pre 2000 rotax engine that has paint on all the bolts as if it has never been into. I have never realy looked at it this way but these engine are lucky to see 400 hours in a boat and I would think that would be a mircale.
