So i originally wanted a dual engine but I saw this and said hey maybe it's worth it. What do you guys think if I can win the bid for sub $1500

I know a new or rebuilt 240 is like 4 grand but a top end kit is like 1000. I could probably rebuild the top end myself, I'd pull the engine somehow lol. Do the top ends like to go on these or bottom ends? He said it's blown but didn't specify or probably doesn't know.

Anyway how do these compare to the 96-99 1800s in towing and speed?

The link isn't working. Just post the auction number.

The Merc engines are strong... but the damage could be anything. And, depending how it was treated... even if the topend is the issue... the crank could be rough. OR... if you get it... there could be a rod hanging out the side. Not to mention... once the engine is rebuilt... there could be a bunch of electrical gremlins, or the pump needs work.

I'm not trying to make it sound bad... but you really don't know until you dig into it. But, if you like to work on stuff yourself... it's worth a try. If you need to have a shop work on it... then it's not worth it.

this one should work..i posted the other one from the app that's probably why.

yeah i mean i could do the top end. I've done a few 2 stroke atvs but I've always shied away from bottom ends. I'm hesitant on this due to the price of a new or rebuilt block. I don't want it to become a money pit or become a pile of shit in my yard. I'm definitely no mechanic i just like to hobby with my cars/trucks and toys. Anything real serious i would need to take to a shop.

Like with a rotax 2 stroke i could easily buy 2 new engines but when its 5k for a new engine im on edge

It's still hard to say.

If you can get it for $1500 or less... then it's not a bad gamble. Basically... it's worth $7k in nice running condition. (give or take)

So... if it's a top end... and the crank is good... you are looking at $1200~1400 to rebuild it yourself. That's a new top-end kit, lower bearings, and all the gaskets.

If it's really nice inside... and it's only one or 2 pistons... then it can be "Band-aid'ed" for less $$$$.

If it's really bad... and you don't want to tackle it... you can PROBABLY get your $1500 back out of it.

I guess it's all in how much of the labor you can do.

well good thing i asked the seller if he knew if it was top or bottom. He said a rod went threw the block so forget that i guess. on to the next

yep... a rod is ugly since it's no longer a usable core. (for most shops) Mine was a rod recovery... but I happened to own a Machine shop... and I'm experienced in welding aluminum. But even then... I almost didn't try to bring it back from the dead.
