Is there a timing issue?

My 97 spx is having some problems. Upon starting it backfires through the front carb. It will start it just backfires and I'm wondering if there may be a timing issue. I just had the stator replaced. Thanks

did you ever mess w/ the rotary valve. should be 147*/65* settings.
