intake trouble?

hi...not sur eif this is even the right place to post but i have a 1996 speedster thats causing me grief...put it in the water,...started fine but seemed to have no power....after running a couple minutes it started a high pitched squeal...might have been a warning indicator...took it out of the water and checked for weeds...found a few but not much...put it back in the water...started fine...no squeal for a few minutes then started again...so took it out of the water....is the lack of power because of weeds in the intake or impellor or something?...any ideas on what to try...thanks in advance

Make sure impeloor and wear ring are good, and the gap between the two is no more than 1mm. Also, under the grey shields behind the motor, a round disck,PTO, theres a zerk fitting, grease it up...
