Hydro turf by the sheet

Hello I am looking to buy hydro turf by the sheet. They have a 47x86 inch sheet in 'cut groove' and 'flat'. How hard is it to cut the 'cut groove' and make it look nice? I am just wondering what the edges look like for example on a curved cut. Do they look 'funny'?

Has anyone used just the flat hydro turf? I think this would be easier to cut and make it look nice. How is the traction with the flat? I would assume it is still better than nothing.

I own a 2001 Utopia and it does not appear to have a lot of areas to cover. Do you think one 47x86 inch sheet will be enough? Thanks

You saw the $30 sheet too huh? I was thinking of buying one too and using it on the rear swim platform- it does get slippery and with 3 kids it is an accident waiting to happen! I got the free sample they offered in the mail and it felt good and I did cut it- no issues! smooth cut.
One sheet will not do it if you want to cover the floor- I would say 4 sheets. Why not order the precut?

Actually the sheets I was looking at were $70 for the flat and $80 for the cut groove. They are pretty big so I would think I could do two pieces for the swim platform and the floor of the interior with one sheet. If it takes three or four sheets I would definitely get the precut. The sheets I am looking at are 47 inches x 86 inches. Thats about 4 feet by 7 feet. I think that would cover a lot of the boat for $80 plus the cost of the glue.

Don't use glue. Pay the extra for the 3M adhesive backing.

I just put diamond cut hydroturf on my boat. A friend cut it by using pre-cut 1/4" plywood cutouts, but I bet with a carpet knife and slow hand, keeping that knife at 90 degrees, you could make it look good.

That looks awesome. I am still debating on just getting the precut or getting a big sheet and cutting it myself. I may just wait for Christmas and when my wife asks what I want just show her the link. Now to decide on a color...lol...I am thinking of just going with black.

I have done a lot to my boat and by far the Hydroturf was the best thing. Easy to put down with the pre cut with adhesive backing.

I spent the $$$ on a cut kit. It wasn’t cheap… but it saves a lot of time. I installed it in about 30-40 minutes by myself. All I did was to wipe each section with acetone to make sure there was no dirt and wax… then, stuck it down. Easy!

My boat was a project… so the $$$ for the cut kit wasn’t a big deal. Also… since I put WAY more labor into the restoration… I didn’t feel like cutting all the patterns, and then the hydro truf, and it makes the boat look so much better. (IMO)

Last thing… I go way back in PWC world… and I remember gluing down mats in the foot wells of the old stand up jet skis… and just to do one of those would take over an hour. (with prep and clean up) not to mention, there would always be a little run, or spill of contact cement making the job look like A$$. Then… even if you were extra carful… by the end of the season, a corner of the mat would be lifting because the cement didn’t adhere as well as it should have. I would imagine that it would be a full day to cut and glue all the sections down because of the time it would take to build a tack… and press it on… then let it cure. With the 3M… you stick… press… and your done. Walking on it just helps it stick better. With the contact cement… walking on it may cause it to shift. (before it’s fully cured)

So… without a doubt… BUY IT WITH THE 3M ON THE BACK!!!!

Installation

What should I do with the carpet snaps when doing a HT install? Should I remove these and fill the holes before applying, or just apply on top of the holes left when the snaps come out?

I’m planning on doing this and I'm unsure what to do?

My boat didn’t have carpet snaps… but if it did… I would probably put a little squirt of RTV in the holes. That way it would be sealed… but the RTV is soft enough that if you wanted to put the carpet back in… all you would have to do is run the screws in the old holes. (they would push out the silicone) It probably doesn’t matter one way or the other… just saying what I would do.
