I purchased a used 2000 LRV with 947 engine. Was informed that Seadoo replaced engine 2 yrs ago and that it worked fine, but starter had went bad. It came with a locally rebuilt starter (not yet installed) with a tag from shop indicating that it had been rebuilt. Starter looked a little rough with rust on exterior and copper shavings on frame near gear splines.
I cleaned starter off and installed - that was educational for a PWC newbie. Go to start and conclude battery is shot. Purchase new AGM 325 CCA battery from parts store. Jet ski had not run since last summer - it eventually fires up. I run it for 4 seconds with no water. It fills garage up with smoke in those 4 seconds. I figure 2 stroke. Come back the next night, make sure everything is OK, push start and here "click". Check battery voltage and it had drained a little. Charge it to 12.8V, re-install, motor turns over. Drop ski in water, fire it up, smokes for 30 seconds, leave dock, it sounds funny, starts to bog down & dies 300 yds from dock. Hit start and hear click - take it home. Next night, charge battery and repeat - starts, then later, click. Have battery load tested and at 12.5V, reads 317 amps. Dealer says that that's more than enough amperage since they only recommend 225CCA.
Since ski died on water, it will not turn over any more. Click sounds like a very loud, heavy metal clunk. Through troubleshooting, I have done the following: checked fuse in electrical box, and fuses in MEM - all good. Observed postive cable corroded - replaced all ground and positive cables with new (upsized with car battery cable from autoparts store - 4gauge). Replaced solenoid with new from dealer. Observed grounds on front of engine (to right of flywheel housing) were corroded - removed, cleaned cables and engine frame & re-connected. Removed started, took to autoparts store and it read 45A under no load. I messed up and did not test under load on ski.
I read a thread about about seeing if the pto drive will free spin to determine hydrolock. Clamped on a vice grip and it will not. Removed brand new spark plugs and observed the white porcelain bottoms look like they have been sitting in coffee with some brown oil residue on tips. Tried to free spin drive shaft again with plugs out - will not turn.
In my one month of ownership, the DESS lanyard never gives 2 beeps when inserting the key. Only one very faint short beep.
I do not know which direction to go now. Should I re-install re-built start and try to test under load on ski, purchase a new starter and re-install, or do I have hydrolock since the drive shaft will not turn?
Any assistance and advice is greatly appreciated !! Thanks in advance.
