Any of you guys belong to any of these clubs, such as eagles, elks, moose, american legion, vfw , etc etc ??? guess im gettin old and joined fraternal order of eagles - http://www.foe3566.com/index.php wasnt sure about any of them, when i lived up north, they had sportsmans clubs, and these type of clubs, you all know griz, he likes to have a beer time to time, and they are real cheap, but i seen the other side of this club, and man, pretty powerful... they did a dinner couple weeks ago for injured vets, and doing things for childrens hospital, makes you wonder how lucky we all are with our health and good fortune... any of you others belong to these clubs ???

Generally speaking they exist for good reasons and have held very good events for those in need.

I joined the Elks Club with my father and older brother.
After about a year I was deployed over seas. While deployed I got a letter from the club stating my dues was due. I replied to remind them I was deployed and would submit payment upon returning home to the states. About a month later I get a letter stating they do not care what the reason is an that I am banned from the lodge. It went on to explain it takes character and what not to be a part if such an elite organization ect ect.

I was not impressed but being in Saudi it was not the place to let it bother me. 18 months later I come home and they want to hold a dinner for "their local hero"...

I said no thank you and presented the letters they sent me.

They were shocked and asked me to forgive their ignorance.

I still believe in these type of organizations. Just had a hard time getting over this one.

I am in our local FOP as it is in honor of a fallen comrade of mine.

I belong to the Moose club, but only because I play in a poker game there and have to be a member to get in the door. Joe, I'm hoping that was a form letter or just some dufus that sits behind a desk. I certainly understand your bitterness toward them. That letter is just soooo wrong!

The letter was a bit if each.

A dufus (their accountant in this case) filled out the empty blanks. My name and address and what not. The second letter was all his. He typed it out from scratch.

I'm sure I am in the low percentile in regards to this kind of an issue. It still sucked. Plus I was younger and less mature. I probably could have handled it better. ;-).

Glad to see you back Grizz.

I'm a member of the local Sportsman Club... but I use it more for a shooting range. Some of the older guys use it as a social club. In Pitt... it seems like the "OLD" clubs are just a way to make a bar where the old people drink. (like the Elks, Moose, VFW, Fireman's club, etc)

not a member myself, but my pop's is a member of the moose...

he brings me in as a guest now and then, they have a killer tuna salad platter for $6 :)

otherwise I just view it as a place for the old timers, especially those that smoke (private clubs can allow indoor smoking) to hang out and drink, play bingo, etc.

I call it the smoky moose, my wife laff's at that...

well, some members smoke, no bingo though, lol, we play poker, they have a real nice pool hall style pool table, which is free to play, they have slot machines, other games like bar poker, (which is pure luck, dinners every wednesday $5.00, breakfasts every other sunday - 5.00. drinks are 1.50 bottle beer, 1.00 draft , 2.00 mixed drinks
bands or dj's fri and sat, something like fish and chips or tacos, etc on fri nights, sandwiches and burgers every day, people bring stuff in daily seems like, and that food is free, what i like about it, club shows all expendatures and bills, and keeps what it needs to "stay afloat", then monthly excess money is donated to several charities... wife is going to join the womens auxillary ...
hard to believe ole me and jake the only 2 members from here ....

I am a member of the Moose Lodge - joined with my father over 20 yrs ago.
I'm a member of Free & Accepted Masons of Florida. I'm in their motorcycle association (Widow Son's). And I'm planning to join the Shriners this year.

Joined the Moose for cheap drinks & food. Joined the Masons to be part of a great organization that helps others.
