Foam in the engine compartment

I was just wondering, how important are the 2 blocks of foam in the engine compartment? What are the drawbacks if I were to remove them? Other then possibly sinking if i took on too much water. Do they also serve as sound dampeners?

The foam is there so the boat will not sink if filled with water, also does have an effect on the balance.

They keeped my boat afloat and the motor dry when the bailer tube came off.
