Explorer Engine Conversion

Hi guys

I currently have a 650 Explorer with a duff engine and want more power. I know a 720 will drop straight in but I'm feeling adventurous.

I think a 787 can be made to fit, based on the HX conversions I have seen online. But for the same amount of work, I am wondering if a 951 could be made to fit as well.

I understand that engine mounts will need to be changed, question is has anyone ever done either of these conversions before on an Explorer and has anyone any advice to get me started? I am planning to buy a doner ski so that I have all parts needed.

What's a "Duff" engine?

Personally... I wouldn't mess with the 951 engine. Yes, it makes good power, but the life is short. If it was my boat... I would slap in a 720, and call it a day. Besides... you can get a good running 720 PWC cheap.

Ok so I bought a 717 engine off eBay, I've been assured by the seller that its running 100% and from a fresh water ski. I'm a bit wary about just taking his word for it, is there anything I can or should be checking out before fitting it? I've never opened an engine before, I could take it to someone if needs be..

I would have bought a donor ski, since you will need the supporting electronics too.

BUT... since you already have the engine... I would simply do a compression check. If it passes, bolt it in, and hope for the best.
