i recently purchased a 1997 xp limited and have seen regular 1997 xp skis what is the diffrence in the 2.

2: where do you find the engine plate that tells me which motor i have.. only reason i ask is because im not 100%sure i have a 1997 or a 1998 and i read that their is 2 diffrent motors for those 2 years on wikapedia + when i purchased the ski i got the warranty for the replacement motor and all the service records..

directly from wikipedia

The 1997 XP was a marked departure from the previous models. An all new hull specific to the XP was developed which brought a "lean in" style of riding to the craft. Further enhancing this was Sea-Doo's "Direct Action Suspension," a raised seat that was mounted on a pivot and had a shock absorber at the opposite end. The 110HP 782cc engine was carried over, as was the predominantly yellow with black accents color scheme.3 The 1997 boat was over 90 lbs heavier than the 1996 boat, which resulted in slower acceleraion from the previous year although realizing a top speed gain by about 1 mph. Nonetheless, the riding experience was enough for the XP to win WaterCraft World's Watercraft of the Year award in 1997.4

For 1998, the power to weight issue was solved by the new XP Limited model. This craft was powered by a 951cc (called a Type 947 )engine with reed valves on the intake and R.A.V.E. valves on the exhaust. The new engine produced 130HP and pushed the 1998 XP to 60 mph. Graphically, the lower hull, cowling, and handle pole cover were now black, and the hood and cowling pod were metallic gray.

hear is some pics of my ski maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

You can figure out the year by looking at your HIN#. Its on the back by your exhaust. The last 2 numbers will be the year. So look for 97 or 98.

I think limited was added to the name in 98. The 97 is a 787 and the 98 is the 951. I also think the 97 was all yellow. The black and yellow was in 98. So i think you have a 98. Look on the hull ID tag. last 2 digits are the year.

hear is the yr tag.. it says 97.

where is the hull tag?

so which motor do i have.
787
787x
or the 951?

im so lost.

The year is on the hull tag. Its like a vin for a car. Go to the back of your ski and it should be there. On my 95 xp it is above the exhaust exit. It will be a long number and the 95 is on the end for mine. I dont think that number shows the year but I could be wrong. The motor size should be on the box in front of the motor. It should say it right on top of that box on a little tab that is riveted to that box. Dont know all the technical terms but thats how I can try to explain it. The box is the one that has the grounds for the spark plug boots. Hope this helps.

well the hull tag ens with a 98 but i still cant find the vin/identification tag thats rivited. ive used a flash light and stuck my head around. any tips to where it might be front left/right or next to something. ill keep looking..
thx 4 all the help so far.

rep added rfoster130 thx very much..

now all i need to do is get the vtc unit working.:( it works at the box when you hot wire it but not from the hand controls any help?

does anyone use any of the ride plates and intake grates? any recomendations

thx 4 the link and writeup.

i guess my question about the vtc fix with reference to the vtc fix you sent would be.. does the handle control work with that setup?

i had found a skamatic of the vtc unit and their was to much to read in reference to the whole system as a whole their was no way to really narrow it down to the vtc hand control and vtc modual
i can hook it up 2 the positive/ground and get the worm drive to move/work my problem is at the handcontrols

There is a way to check the continuity of the switch. I am just not sure how. IF you look around, surely someone has done it. I know the switches can be found on ebay for like 15 bucks.
