Hey guys,

My budget is about to be spread SUPER thin, so it doesn't look like I'll be able to afford a new $4-500 crank for my the ski that I still aim to build sometime next year. I was going to buy an oem or hotrods crank as I just lost a reman one at like 40 hours. So I wanted to see if I could rebuild one myself. I looked up how to do it, and it doesn't seem too bad. I have a press and torch, and runout gauge etc. I have pulled bearings and transmission assemblies apart before. But never a crankshaft.

So the first thing I wanted to know is where to get good quality parts. The only connecting rods I found online were WSM and TOP brand. Is either better than the other? Do some bearings wear out faster than others? Where is a good place to get these kits and how much should I expect to spend?

My advice would buy an oem crank just watch ebay I bought one for less than 200 bucks for my xp800 build and its brand new. It did not have the end bearings on it though

wow, brand new and less than 200? sounds too good to be true, end bearings or not. i can't find anything under $400 every time I look.

yep, carbed 787. a saved search? didn't realize that was even a thing... I do believe this qualifies as LIFE CHANGING KNOWLEDGE

Thanks!

I highly suggest you not try to rebuild the crank yourself. I did a couple and will not do it again. At the time, I had two presses, a 20 ton and 50 ton. The 20 ton was not strong enough for the task. It is a ton of trial and error if you don't have the perfect fixtures to set it up. You basically have to work up from the middle, press a section together slightly, test for true, if not true, beat on it to move it into true, press more, test for true, if not true, beat on it, and once it is presses on far enough, will not respond to beating it, so if it goes out of true, you press it back apart. Total pain in the azz.

Walk into any dealer give them 421000076 and it should cost you $438 plus a $200 core. Go with a core already and you don't have to wait to get your $200 back. The last OEM rebuilt crank I scored was off ebay for $235 shipped and it was complete.

Why not just buy a SBT crank for $275. I would personally only use OEM cranks but there have been a lot here use them with absolutely no problems. They will probably last longer than a first time do it yourself rebuild and the price is within your budget.

Not sure of the specifics, you will have to check their website. I think it was free shipping and 3 year warranty on black friday, just kidding.

SES is doing a special. 699 for a 787 with a warranty. Why not just do that? I bet you wish you had one on the 40 hour ski
