this is probably a stupid question but how does the pump get the water into the ski?

The impeller forces it through

The water intake is in the jet aft of the impeller at the top. The water is forced into the water inlet hose when the impeller is spinning. The faster the motor is running, the higher the thrust, the more water being forced through the system. The nice thing about flushing your jet is you are actually back flushing the system.
