Coils pop off spark plug

Had a really strange problem come up today for the second time after replacing plugs and coils. One of the coils pops off the plug! After some investigation found that the plug is in properly, coil is a good secure fit on to the plug terminal. Performance is fine believe it or not...they are aftermarkets purchased in the US...any help appreciated...

Buy OEM coils, the aftermarkets could possibly be slightly oversized???.

OR

Last time I changed my plugs I had trouble getting one of the coils to stay on the plug, and the problem was too much dielectric grease. When I was pushing the coil on, I could feel it creating a pocket of pressurized air which was pushing the coil back off the spark plug. I removed some of the grease and the coil seated the way it should.

Did you maybe use too much dielectric grease?

Yes, that could solve it I guess. I have the originals still. Doesn't really provide me with the reason why it would happen though. Any ideas?

did you unscrew the cap off the plug? the coils fit very tightly on the threaded shaft of the plug top that actually grab the top of the plug. when you install the coil, you have to literally hit it with your hand and you'll hear it attach to the plug. there is no way a coil should every fall off a plug.

Nope, all pushed on firmly. Because the terminal on the plug is threaded you can screw the coil on instead of 'hammering' on, although I tried both methods with the same result. It's only #1 cyl so I'll swap #1 and #2 and see if the problem follows the coil...

Uhm...there's no way I could "thread" my coils on any plug. No where enough wire to allow that. Are you original owner?

I'd check both the #1plug and #1coil.

never tried to thread one on. I guess if you unplugged the connector that it could be done but the rubber boot fits really tightly so I would think this would be a major pain. I've used aftermarket coils before and they seemed to fit just like the OEMs so not sure what you have going on there.

Nearly time for crickets with summer coming. Auckland is a sensational place for jet skiing, and jetski fishing!

Haven't been out since the "discovery" but will do this weekend. Coils changed around to see if problem follows new coil. Stand-by for a response;)

Okay, thanks for your patience...I changed coils two and three around and hey presto, problem gone! Still not sure what happened, but no complaints now after three times out, and four hours of running.
