I have read a lot of threads about proper way to change pump oil and stator oil, but when I changed pump oil today I did not have threaded hose attachment so it was a mess. I pumped until it built up pressure and I plugged the hole as quick as I could seemed like a minimal amount was lost in the process considering. I did have the vent screw in when I was filling. I was wondering if I remove the vent screw and get oil seepage is that the process to check oil level? Just a little paranoid I guess. Comments or advice for next time would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm assuming that you have a Mercury engine???? (i'll move the thread)

You can't fill the gear box, with the vent still in. Otherwise... you will pressurize the gear case. Open the vent, and pump the oil in... until you see it come out the vent. Then... put the vent screw in... and then remove the fill hose, and put the fill screw in.

If you look in the Merc section, you will find a short document on how to properly service the pump.

Spend a few bucks and get the Mercury lube pump. It will make it alot less messy.
