charge battery light is on !!

hi all, trying to get things squared away as the weather is warming up !!...I have a 96 spx. Its had the charge battery light on since I bought it last year. The guy I bought it from just replaced the rectifier before I bought it, so Im looking at the stator. a couple questions, when I took the flywheel off there were a bunch of metal shavings inside (lots). Would that cause the light to be on ? I checked resistance between the 2 yellow wires (.6 ohms). Between the black and the black /red (.59 ohms). That seems right. I checked the 2 yellows and the black/red to ground for a short. There was no short. I checked the black wire (ground wire) to ground and it DOES show a short. But that's right, because its the ground wire, right ? Im thinking the metal shaving are the problem. Thankful for any help, Glen

Yes the shavings will mess it up but they should not be there. You have to find out what's going on in there. Obviously there is (or was) contact somewhere.

Matt, The previous owner had installed the wrong starter. There were threads in the mounting ears of the starter and threads on the mounting surface that the starter tightens up to. So it did not tighten up surface to surface, it tightened in the threads. This made the starter a tiny bit wobbly. I think that caused the chipping of the fly wheel or starter. It was the cause of a grounding issue as well. I have the correct starter now.

Matt, The previous owner had installed the wrong starter which caused excessive chipping on the fly wheel and/or starter. I have the correct starter now. Im pretty sure that was the problem. Just want to verify before putting everything back together. I used the multimeter to test for shorts, Im touching one lead to each pin in the wiring harness going to the stator and the other lead to the engine for ground. Both yellows and the red/black show no short, But the black DOES show a short (so continuity). But the black is the ground wire so that's ok, right ?? Or is that black ground wire somehow isolated, so it should NOT show a short ? thanks for the help.....

Yes black is system ground and show show continuity, it should be a really small amount of resistance or zero resistance.

Im stuck...I cant get the charge light off. Ive checked the stator as stated earlier. I took all the metal chips out around the flywheel when I took that off. I put it all back together. I fired it up and increased the rpms to 5000. I checked the voltage on the battery while the revs were up and it reads 14.47. That's good. Where else should I look ? Any and all help/advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.....
