I have a 98 GTX limited with 951 in it. I am rebuilding my carbs and once i took it apart I noticed the spring wasn't black. Everything i have read says the 951 carb springs are black....here is a picture . Do you think I will have problems with this spring? I plan on testing the pop off but didn't want have to take it apart if it is a known issue

I had same questions on my GTX carb springs. The Sea Doo manual say's 95g spring. Looking at Mikuni the 95g spring and 2.0 needle and seat popoff was hi according to Sea Doo Specs but on the money with Mikuni specs.

No, the 951 engine uses a special 95 gram spring that is different than all other 95 gram springs.

great...now the screw for the little clear flap(pictured) wont come out and is stripped...any recommendations on getting this out? I don't think I got an easy out that small either

update: got it out but the screw is pretty bugered.....I did have an easy out that small! need a new screw...

If your carbs haven't been apart and have the correct seats then just reuse your springs.
The new Mikuni kits for the 951 46i carbs will have the correct special 95 gram spring.

The "special" 95 gram spring should measure exactly 16.4 mm.
The standard 95 gram should measure exactly 15.85 mm.

i measured and it is 15.85, the mukini kit I ordered from osd didn't come with spring, will this cause problems.

There is no such thing as a black 95 gram spring. Black is 80 gram.
You want either Seadoo #270500313 Spring
or Mikuni Number 730-03034
Platinum 95 Gram Spring

You need to use the proper JIS driver, lots of pressure and be very patient as your Phillips will likely cone the entire bit slot.

also, dont reuse parts, get the proper Mikuni rebuild kit and test your pop-off then.

I got the JIS screwdriver, it didn't fit the screw for that plastic film. I have read where you can reuse springs on this carb...is that not true?

Sorry to have misled you, i only meant to convey that you should replace it if you have fresh springs to put in. Keeps things crisp and even, closer to oem performance/ response. Like Mikidy said, its the only thing you should reuse. Or consider…

I, in my own opinion, use new when ive bought new. Retain the springs and mark them as “20y/o use 95’s (98 GTX)” and put them aside.

Either way, best of luck.

PS Be really gentle with the small red diaphragm when cleaning carb accelerator pumps. It'll break, they always break.

Ok, I'm following the carb rebuild thread but not knowing much about these carbs, the carb with the pulse line is confusing me. The pulse line I am assuming doesnt push gas through the carbs directly because it is cut off with the clear film. What does this do, create negative pressure for fuel line? Do I need to do anything with this when I am doing the pop off?

The pulse line just moves the fuel pump diaphragm in and out to pull and push the fuel through the pump.
You don't do anything with it when checking for pop-off or leak-down.

I did the pop off with the current springs and I got 23/24 on one and 30(pulse line carb) on the other.. the manual says 19 - 23. Any ideas why one spring would be that much off but not the other? Just curios and learning.

New needles and seats?
New lever arm and shaft?

Try swapping parts from carb to carb and see if it changes.
Yeah, that sounds good! Are you sure that you have both the needle lifters bent to the same position? There could be fluctuation die to that as well so keep an eye on what is where and how it is all seated.

OSD Sea Doo Complete 947 951 Dual Carb Rebuild Kit - OEM VITON NEEDLES

Il try swapping parts to see what i get.
