Bolting the engine down in the boat...how to center it?

I left the rubber boot mounts on the floor and there appears to be shims under them. When I pulled the motor out, I just pulled the single bolt out the center and lifted it up.

Now, the motor is back in and assembled, but only finger tightened to those mounts. It will move around about 1/2" in all directions. How do I figure out where it is supposed to be before I torque down those bolts?

You need an alignment tool. They are sorta like a driveshaft but held in place. I am not sure how much they are though...go check out the forms on SBT I am sure you will get lots of hits for "Engine Alignment"

Your other option would be to take it to a dealer and have it properly aligned...not sure how much this would be either.

Whatever you do, make sure your engine is aligned correctly before you bolt it down. If you don't expect bearing/driveshaft problems down the road.

Hope this helps!

Matt

Edit #1: I just went over there and looked for you. Check out this link:http://server1.sbtontheweb.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12009

I didn't watch it....so hopefully it's helpful!

Edit #2: Watched it. I think you will find it very helpful.

Weird...it worked for me just now. Give it a few mins and try again.

Basically, it is a step by step process of how to align your engine. Shows you the tool that you need and how to use it. Looks like you need the tool no matter what or you take the chance of screwing something up. I never really tried to find out how much the tool is though.

It is a driveshaft looking thing and a plate the bolts on the the ski where the pump would bolt on with a hole in it. You are then supposed to shove the driveshaft thing through the hole and and then align your engine to that. Hope this helps. Search 'seadoo engine alignment' on google...maybe you will get some hits.

Looks pretty easy and straightforward.

I really need to get one of these tools, for this job and future jobs...

OK, now where do I find that tool and how much will it cost? I cannot find it on the online parts houses or ebay. I know the local parts store will gouge me. They wanted $85 for a driveshaft removal tool which cost me $15 from ebay.

Or is someone willing to rent one to me for a week or so?

Or can I mount the jet pump and shaft and use a dial indicator to center the engine, then bolt it down?

If you look at my post above...i posted a link to the part on SBT. It is 150, it looks like a lot of people use and return them so if you buyu it and return it you only get half your money back. So I guess you could rent it for $75 :ack:. I am sure a local dealer would do it cheaper than that!

Yeah, I have noticed that many parts dealers overcharge for tools, even cheap and small ones...

I guess they want you to bring it in and let them use their tools. And charge you astronomical rates for the labor :ack:

Parts rental.......

Seadoosource rents parts too........you may give them a check to see if they are any cheaper...

I just looked it up, the alignment tool is $35 dollars to rent, but their is a $250 dollar deposit. If you have a major credit card, he'll just hold that card untill you return the tool. If you don't return it, then he'll charge you for the price of the tool, which is a 100% profit margin.

:agree: That sounds good. $35 is much better than $150!! Just make sure you get insurance with the shipping...you wouldn't want to take a $250 hit for something that gets lost in the mail.

Great idea!!! Thanks for posting that info!!!

Already emailed him to order the tool...

I would think a tool would be best but I have had this discusion with Dennis before and If I have it right what he has done many times before without any problems is to have someone in the back of the boat looking threw where the pump bolts up and eye balling it center. I have never done this to a seadoo before but I have done it many times before with clutch disks, when I did not have a alignment tool and the transmisions have allways homed up with no problems.
