I spent just over $6, but it was a premium boat deserving of the price
The hardware is missing for the latch, so I will need to either buy the hardware or fabricate it. The plastic mounting "clips" are broken

From what I've read, it is easy to fix, but the part is now obsolete and no one has the part anymore :(

The old part number is discontinued. It was superceded by a new part number. Try part 293250096 If you cant find it let me know and ill send you a link.

Congrats! I certainly hope that in a year or so you can look back and say you were correct in your assessment. Definitely looks like you spotted a few lemons before finding this one.
And btw... when I looked at the first 2 pics you posted of the boat in your garage I actually said out loud "damn! that is gorgeous!". :)
I think I just figured out what I'm going to look for to replace my '96 Challenger.

Here are some pictures with measurements of the latch you are missing. I would make a run to the nearest hardware store and buy a metal "L" bracket to fabricate the latch. The 1" raise just before the downward latching part, i believe can be omitted. Just use trimmed down plastic spacers behind the metal to keep tension off the windshield and check to make sure your are not creating a gap at the lip of the storage bin. Here is a link to the "How To" on fixing the windshield that I modified to reattach my latch: http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?43844-Speedster-Windshield-repair-tutorial&highlight=speedster+hinge
