another TPS sensor question...

So I found a NIB TPS on eBay for $277. It arrived today and verified that it was working by checking resistance on both sides. Swapped the sensor and tried testing the old one but it was just dead. Adjusted the new sensor and was able to get it to .25vdc at idle but only 6.9 @ WOT. Question is, do I need to adjust it up some more or is that okay?

It should be fine. At full throttle... the computer doesn't really look at the TPS. It's more for trimming fuel at low RPM's.

Just to ask... did you disconnect the port side temp sender when setting the TPS voltage?

If possible... can you send me your old one? I want to cut it open to see why they fail.

PM me for an address... and if you need a few $$$ for the shipping.

Thanks

Yeah I remembered to disconnect the temp sensor. But I honestly doubted myself since it was reading the same voltage the whole time. I was kinda nervous ordering the new one but once I checked resistance on the new and then compared it to the old, I knew it was the issue. The old one wouldn't even complete the circuit. Then when I set the position of the new one, I knew I was doing it right. Sometimes my boat wouldn't start when it was warm, I'm hoping the TPS was telling it to dump too much fuel into the motor and flooding it out, not to mention it smoked fierce at idle but I had just converted it to pre-mix.

Gonna try and get it out of storage tomorrow and get on the water Monday if I can find a big enough puddle, we're in a drought down here. I'll PM you for the address but it probably won't ship out for a week or so, and no worries about the shipping, you do so much on this board that sending a 5oz box doesn't come close to showing my appreciation.

Thanks for the kind words, and the offer.

I just PM'ed my address.

In the past couple years... the normal problem was with the port side temp sender... but all the sudden... it seems like we've had a rash of bad TPS units. Because of that... I was also looking at that TPS on ebay for $277. I know that was basically, half price... but it's still a big chunk of change to just buy one, to keep as a spare.

I don't know if you saw my thread on finding a cheaper replacement... but I guess if mine goes out... I will be the first to try the unit from the Jag.

I'll get it shipped out.

I was watching your thread about the replacement and was patient because I wasn't going to take the boat out of storage this year (we're in a drought). Then last weekend my wife informed me that we need to have it ready for Memorial Day. I was afraid of ordering the Jag one and it not working, then not being able to get the Merc part in time. Hopefully this will fix all my issues. I tried replacing the port temp sensor last season and it didn't help anything.

Right now... the problem with the Jag TPS (from what I can find) is that the total resistance is lower. It's 6K ohm's, whereas the Merc is 10k.

Normally... that wouldn't be a problem. The resistance overall, is high... and the total current is still in the ma range. AND... since they work as a "Voltage divider"... the ratio is the same, and will give the ECU the proper info.

The problem is... some idiot engineer decided to let the TPS and the port side temp sender, share the same power.

Hummmmmmmm.... ?!?!?!??!?

Now that I'm sitting here thinking about it... it may not effect the values. Resistance in parallel sees the same feed... but is the inverse sum of the values. (that would be the problem) I'll have to go back and look at the wiring diagram, and see if they have a separate return.

I love that movie!

On a side note, TPS worked awesome. No more smoke or starting issues. Overall a great day on the water except for wrapping a rope around the impeller shaft.
