I run my 94 XP on the rivers 95% of the time. They are much cooler than the lakes in AK. The machine shop I deal with does any cylinder bore work .001" to.002" over the factory spec on any motor that is marine use without a closed system. The ice cold water can mess with things on some machines. They have done a lot of rebuilds on outboards and some pwc's that get run before the ice completely melts, the cooler water doesn't let the proper clearance form at running temps.

Yeah, someone told me that also. Guess I was lucky...

I doubt you would have a problem. The shop in my area started going over a hair after a lot of observation and getting feedback from customers. The damage appeared to happen over time and not in one ride, it was mostly outboards since pwc riders wait for warmer weather. The Village communities that rely on rivers for transportation was where most of the info came from, they hit the water as soon as the ice goes out. The big red flag was a motor that had no obvious cause for a failure but had piston to cylinder rub damage consistant with bore size being too small and failing in the spring when the water is the coldest. Water temps are what they would be if you did the read under frozen ice. The over bore motors never came back for the same failures. Just a hair over made all the difference.
