Hey Everyone,

I know there are quite a few posts on this subject, but I wanted to ask some questions about specifics on what you all would do to add a second battery in a 2012 Speedster. I am posting a couple pictures. It seems that the best place to install a 2nd battery is sideways next to the original battery. The problem is that there is a fuse box mounted there. Where should I relocate that to? Any ideas on the best way to install this are much appreciated.

This is just the first step before I consider installing an amp and upgrading the speakers.

Thanks in advance for everyone's support.

I probably should have posted this in the modify section. Anyway...just looking for ideas on where to move that fuse module to. Was that module not located in the same place on earlier years?

In my opinion, I wouldn't move any factory installed equipment. It just gives them a reason to void your warranty.

You make a good point about the warranty. There really isn't another spot to install a 2nd battery. I really wanted to add an amp to improve the sound quality on the boat, especially when the motor is off and we are just hanging out. I know that I would end up killing my battery though. Perhaps I will just improve on the speakers for now. Foster, You still really like your Alpine Speakers?

I've got all kicker speakers. The amp is alpine though. I highly recommend it. It's digital and very efficient. Before the 2nd battery, there were times I would sit and use the system for 2 hours and never had a problem with starting. I carried a battery jump box just in case. I like my speakers. There are better ones out there but I chose kicker because of the subs. The marine subs are free air rated and didn't need a box. They sound great with just using the hull as an enclosure.

Sorry...in all the threads I was reading I know someone had Alpine speakers, I thought it was you. :) I definately would like to improve on the quality of the stereo, but you are right, I don't want to void my warranty. I don't want to cause any electrical problems because I kill my battery either. I see a lot of posts that say you are not supposed to jump the new boats. So I am not sure what I would do if I killed the battery on the water.

You dont want to jump them with a running vehicle. A battery jump box is perfectly fine. It's nothing more than a spare battery in a box with a set of cables hanging off. I would start with new speakers to replace the stock ones. If you only have 2 then add 2 more and upgrade the head unit. Then if that's not good enough, add an amp. Always use stuff that you can add onto. Look for the thread by fearthisinc. He did a nice install on a speedster 150.

Good to know! I will readdress moving that fuse box at a later time when warranty issues are not a concern. Thanks again for your advice!

Here ya go. He did a nice setup and I believe stuck with a single battery. You can setup a nice system that won't drain the battery too much.

I saw that thread. Even he mentions that he can't wait to add a second battery so that he "can shut the motor off and just rock the tunes while swimming"

Foster, Where did you put your subs? I am certainly not going to give up all the storage space that "fearthisinc" did with his speedster. I barley have enough room now with all the stuff that people want me to bring out.

Right in the side wall. Cut a hole and bolt em in.

Personally I don't see a need for a second battery. I assume you are concerned about draining your battery sitting on the lake pounding your stereo? Buy a self contained portable battery booster you decide if you need to bring it or leave it home. That way its not permanently added weight and if you do have the need you can give yourself a boost. I wouldn't think you'll drain your battery that much unless you spend quite a few hrs without running your machine at all. I used to have a Centurion Enzo with a bunch of amps and ran two batteries with an isolator, not once did I ever have to switch batteries to boost my V8.

Cheers

Thanks for all the input. Foster, your boat does look awesome!! I have the dark gray hydroturf and it really does complete the boat. I do go to places on the water here in Florida where the boat stays parked for several hours with the radio going. I think that I will end up getting the jump box just in case after I install the amp. After warranty expires I will revisit the idea of installing a second battery.

Since I want to do this too, what jump box are you guys talking about? links?

can't you add a battery to the other side of the boat in the back? Take it to the shop and have them mount a box for you and you do all the other work. It'll be cheap and won't void your warranty.

The other side has foam all filled in on the 2012. There really is not a good place to put it. I do like the way you are thinking though! I can take some pictures to show you what I mean!

I haven't added one 0myself but I would suggest this for example.

900 amp should be way more then enough but test it first. Disconnect your battery and start your boat with this to insure its got enough jam.

Im sure you can find a better one though. All in one units are usually not worth their weight. If your in Canada I would recommend this. I dont imagine there is many Canadian tires down south although you should... its a great place to shop lol.

WaterManiac, I'm half-way thru installing a second battery in exactly the location you mentioned, here is a pic. Ignore the red circles, they relate to another question I was asking about fuses.

Basically I
- built a wood/duct-tape mold
- greased it with vasoline
- laid fibre-glass strips around the "walls" of the mold
- poured in more fibreglass (mix of resin & fibreglass hair)

Next steps are to
- pour in more resin to make the surface flat
- seat the battery tray while the resin is still wet
- remove the wooden mold once resin dry
- connect the stereo etc
