I have a 98 Seadoo GTS that I bought from a friend that didnt know/want to mess with fixing it. It would do nothing at all when you put the key on. I took it home and didnt mess with it until the next day. I decided to do a fresh fuel system with new lines and filters and plugs. To my surprise....I put the key on, got 2 beeps and after a few seconds with the throttle and choke...it fired right up and I am very impressed with how well this thing runs. It runs like a top. I put the cover on it (which isnt waterproof anymore ive learned) and it sat for a couple days and I was going to take her out and see how she rode.....again, nothing with the key. After reading and reading and reading about it I finally got aggrevated and let it sit this winter. Yesterday I got it out and washed it and wanted to try to get it ready for the water this year. Ill try to explain what I have tried etc:
New battery(of course)
Jumped the solenoid and the starter works...but still nothing with the key.
Tried to go into diagnostic mode, but pressing it 5 times does nothing.
checked for 12v in a few places in the electrical box but I am unsure of every connection that should have 12v.
Ran a jumper from the battery ground directly to the ground stud in the electrical box...still nothing.
I thought it might be the key....but since its not going into diag mode...that eliminates the key ( i assume?)
Then I thought the post...but when its working....you put the key on and get 2 beeps and it cranks right up EVERY TIME! So im thinking its not the post either.
I also questioned the MPEM....but from what I read...the mpem either works...or it doesnt. But again, it recognizes the key and starts/runs perfect....when its working.
Yesterday, I replaced the buzzer/beeper and cleaned the key and post and it was working perfectly. I had planned to take it to the lake today. Well it rained (not bad but it rained) last night and when I went out....nothing. So it hit me that maybe the water or moisture in the air is screwing something up? Today it was pretty hot and dry and about 30 minutes ago I went out thinking...if it works, its because whatever it is, dried out. Low and behold, cranks flawlessly again.
So I thought if its water....ill get a spray bottle and maybe when the problem area gets wet, it will stop and I will at least know which area Im working with. So I drowned the post (top side and bottom) and its still working.
And now Im here. I didnt want to go spraying water where Im not sure of what I could screw up, so I wanted to get some help first.
I have no idea where the grounds are that I should be checking. I have read that the main ground is at the magneto...but I dont even know what a magneto is...much less where it is lol.
I would greatly appreciate any help guys. If I didnt shave my hair...id be pulling it out right about now lol.
(Sorry for such a long post...I wanted to get as much info as possible up front)
THANKS!!
EDIT: Just wanted to add....the ski wasnt touched or moved in any way between the time that it worked...and it didnt and then worked again. The seat was on so it wasnt open to get rained in. The only thing that I can think of that was exposed was the post/key.
