97 GTX Pump Rebuild - Bearing Replacement - Questions

Status
Not open for further replies.
So i finally have time today to work on my ski pump. I am replacing the following

-bearings - OSD kit
-impeller - Solas Concord
-wear ring - OEM
-seals & cone oil - What ever came w/the osd kit

I have some questions though.

So here I cut the wear ring out

Used flat heads to help lift and pry it a little. It cracked when doing so as I had it in the freezer hoping it would make things easier.

Tool i used is a $15 body saw from harbor freight.

Here I am taking the removal tool provided by a member on this forum to remove the old bearings using my harbor freight press.

Bearings out and it looks clean inside

Old bearings on top, new bearings on bottom

Old on top new on bottom but these look different. The old one is larger in size and has that groove?

Opposite side:

Side by side you can see the old one is thicker ??

My questions are

1) Why is the new bearing smaller in thickness & one side has an open area vs the original bearing which was solid? Bearing/water pump kit was purchased by OSD.

2) Do i need to grease the new bearings or are these simply greased by the cone oil?

3) Anything else I need to inspect or check out while I am here? I have the manual but its really not the best when it comes to this portion of the resto.

4) where do those orings go? It came with 1 large oring and two small ones but I dont see those on the pump anywhere.

Thanks for your time as always guys!

Big one for jet pump cone

95 XP800!!!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

oh ok great, didn't even think of that since its outside. Alright thanks!

Anyone have any reccomendations to cleaning that white gunk off the outside casing? Basically my brother used super strong wash soap/acidic and it out white crap all of the plastic pieces. I think the reverse bucket is a lost cause trying to clean up or make black again but the water pump housing isn't terrible. Going to try steel wool first then maybe use back to black once its normal looking

I got the bearings pushed in and all is well. I am curious if these need to be greased though. I don't see it in the sea doo manual but in a video the guy puts lithium grease on the inside of the bearings.

Also curious if most people replace the small shaft as well. In videos the washer slides over it and its very tight fitting. Mine is pretty easy to slide it down with a little play around it. I think it may be worn out a bit.

Can anyone confirm? Hoping to wrap this up today. Searched the web and forum no luck. I do see in the manual that the "seal" needs to be packed before installation but nothing about the bearings. From the design it looks like the bearings are simply greased by the cone pump oil but would like to confirm before I finish this up & reinstall.

I believe the grease is just to hold the bearing and washer so they stay in place and do not get caught when tightening the impeller.

make sure you use the correct sealant on the seal, cone and pipe plug. I did not use the correct sealant on the plug and had water intrusion, and destroyed the pump and shaft. I purchased the entire pump with the reverse bucket if you want to replace yours, and it is the same part. Mine is out of a 96 gtx. I can see what part # it is. $25 plus shipping if you want it.

That would be great, ill definitely buy that. Take paypal? I can scrub the other stufff but that reverse bucket is nasty. Too much time to try and bring it back to black lol

Make sure you do not pinch that thrust washer when you put the pump back together. The pump should spin freely once the impeller is back on. If not, you most likely pinched the washer. I replaced my shaft when I rebuilt my pump. Mine had grooving in it and I figured since I was replacing everything else why not. For the impeller, sbt offers a rebuild service. They will send you a rebuilt impeller and you send your core back to them. Think I paid $60 plus shipping. They do have a $250 core charge though to be sure they get one back from you. For the white residue on the pump and bucket try a lime scale remover like lime away. Spray it, let it sit, scrub and rinse. Worked great on mine.

Just read the thread again and if the white marks are from the acid solution your brother used to clean, the lime away will not work. You can scotch pad the pump housing and paint it. The bucket would need to be replaced. The lime away works great for calcification build up.

Yea I pinched the thrust washer when putting mine back together. Just be careful when you are doing and verify that the pump spins free ans Luv2camp suggested

Awesome thanks guys, i really appreciate the help as always. Its been a huge learning curve rebuilding this ski vs working on a car and couldn't have made it this far without everyone's help that is for sure.

Ill replace the shaft just to be on the safe side & try the scotch pad & paint for everything but the reverse bucket. That piece is too far gone lol. Thanks!

May want to check eBay for the shaft. I scored a brand new one for $25

Just checked and cheapest is $55

You may try this-

I tried the mixture of 50% paint thinner and 50% boiled linseed oil on the reverse bucket and nozzle. Not sure if it will hold up but it made an AMAZING difference! After a season, it is not as black anymore, but still looks very good.

Black magic, comes in a spray bottle for $5. When it fades again just re hit it. No need to mix your own concoction.

I had the stuff sitting on the shelf. So FREE. It lasted way longer than the tire black stuff I used on the other ski. Maybe black magic is magic though...

Thanks guys. I am going to buy the bucket from tkar & I will clean it up & use back to black on it to keep it fresh. I am going to try the steel wool method on the existing pump I have & then back to black or try 50% paint thinner and 50% boiled linseed oil as I have that stuff around as well. Or if all else fails I will just scuff it, prime it & paint it.

Its not really something anyone see's but I am kind of OCD and put this much time into the restore as is so might as well finish up strong.
