Trouble with jet pump bearing installation

I am installing new bearings into a 1999 GTX jet pump. I am using a press and a gauge to measure the depth and I had the new bearings exactly at the depth of the old ones. I do not have the special tool to use. The bearings will fit over the shaft when they are not installed but after I pressed both of them in I could not get the shaft to go into the front bearing. I will go into the back bearing fine but not go through the front one. I removed the shaft I tried to put it in from the front of the pump just to see if it would go in but it will still not go into the bearing. Any idea what is going on here. I removed the bearings but destroyed one in the process so I am waiting on new bearings.

You must have damaged it with your press method. No way pressing in a bearing correctly would damage the ID.
