sick of driving to water to test with failed results...

1997 gsx 787, 145 psi both cyl, 9 out of 10 times wont beep when key on

came to me flooded (water in cyls) so i cranked and cranked till no more mist, squirting oil in the cyl periodiclly, tried to fire it up but it had super weak spark (i could hang on to plugs and engine and hardly feel anything. new ignition coil and fixing botched pickup coil wire solved the lack of spark.

had it running and taking throttle good on the hose, put it in water and get nothing but pops and backfire out exhuast. pull it out and it will eventually start and rev with some feathering.

after 2 carb cleans, new fuel, rotary timing and clearance checked,no tempo lines, i have fuel line from fuel pump to screw on filter straight to reserve line on tank (petcock bypass) it runs better on the trailer and a second or 5 longer in the water but will not stay running in water.

carbs: unsure what springs are in it.

tried carbs set to 32 pop and would only idle in water and slight throttle would immediatly bog and die

tried at 38pop and it had a slower bog but still wouldnt take throttle.

i can work it up to wot with some choke feathering which tells me it needs more fuel but it was worse with 32pop.

pretty sick of driving back and forth to the ramp, any insight would be greatly appreciated.

plugs are an 2 min idle chop in water

has 145 psi both cyl.. and when i do get it wot on the trailer in water i can hear it run better/ rev higher when choke is applied.

So i rebuilt the carbs with genuine kits. Put 2.0 seats in with black 80g springs. That had the pop around 18, around 15 with diaphram in.
It is a little different behaving but still super hard to start in water, and wont idle low enough in water. Have tried adjustin L screws from 1/2 out to 2.5 out in 1/4 steps. And had minimal improvement. This was also with fuel selector bypassed so it was from res on sender to water seperator to pump.

Definitely not if it is stock. You will have way too much fuel.

To answer your question, you can't run 2.0's on a stock engine. Just put in 1.5's like it should have.

Just make sure you use the 80 gram springs, should be about 35 psi.
Before i take it out to water. I have now got the 1.5 needle and seat installed and the black 80 spring. Pop was around 35-38, i set L to 1 out and H to lightly seated. Still takes choke and 1/8 throttle to start unless was just recently started.
Anything i should try to get a better start?

Get it in the water and set the idle to 1500 rpm. It should only need choke first thing in the morning and not throttle to start.

Well put it in the water with the jet pump submerged and exhuast just above. Had to choke it and 1/4 throttle to get it going. Still ran like sht. I set idle to 1500 and i could get it tonstay there but any touch of the throttle would kill it. Adding small ampunts of choke didnt help. Only way i could get it to wot is starting it woth choke and 1/4 throttle then once it starts to take i go wot. Stops revving ar 4680rpm but i am on a trailer. Tried with L at 1/2 all the way to 21/2 no difference but smoke

Found that if i put my hand over the mesh soark arrestor it has better throttle response but obviously hates wot. Doesnt matter if it has airbox on or not. Still shity below 1/2 throttle.

Starts better out of water though. but still scared of the water.

Unsure what to do next as it seems ive tried everything.

You are lean. Either from carbs or an air leak
thats what i was thinkin, restricting intake increases vacum making the n/v pop sooner right? I dont think lowering pop is the right thing to do. Its in the range according to spec. Would putting bigger pilots and same pop be a reasonable next step? After confirming no air leaks ofcourse

There really isn't any magic on these and Seadoo did a really good from the factory. Assuming your engine is stock, doesn't have issues and are close to sea-level they will run perfectly with the stock carb settings. If they don't you have an issue somewhere and shouldn't start tweaking the carb to cover up the underlying issue.
