97 717 gti rotary valve shaft question

97 gti rotary valve shredded the bearing and gear. The little plug on the case behind the bearing that the manual says “do not remove”. How bad is it if it is removed?. Is it just epoxy back in or is the case ruined?

Anyone know about rebuilding these 717’s?

You could try the epoxy on the plug.

You need to split the cases to chang eout the shaft. You should also inspect al the bearings and seals. As well as determine why it stripped.

I have it split. I cannot find any direct reason it ate the brass gear. The rear rotary valve shaft bearing isn’t smooth but it turns. There are a couple of nicks in the crank gear as well.

Is the crank gear still centered?
