96gsx power issue

1996-gsx

Hello all i recently picked up a two1996 seadoo gsx. I’m having trouble with one of them, i hooked up a new battery and installed either of the keys it cranks and fires up but after shutting off and letting the system power down it does not start back up/ have any power at all, no gauges buttons or nothing. Doing some research through this forum and s few other i have a feeling it might be the mpem. Need some help diagnosing, doesn’t beep or anything, im sure the buzzer is broken due to its age/ common issue i borrowed the ignition relay out of the other ski and it has the same issue starts once the battery is first hooked up but then no power to gauges/ anything. The other one runs fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I’m new to the jet ski world. I Did test the ohms on the dess and read around 0 down by the power box connection. Checked all fuses/ power being delivered to the ignition relay in the power box it has power. Any info would help thanks.

Since you have 2 identical skis you could swap MPEMs or the whole front electrical box to check the MPEM and other electronics in the box. But before doing that I would do some more limited testing. First disconnect the power connector going to the VTS box. If the VTS motor or electronics are shorted out that may be interfering with the power to the rest of the ski. If the beeper in your running ski is working then you could run a couple of jumper wires between the beeper 2 pin connectors (under front hood behind storage bin) to see what kind of beep codes you get that may help diagnose what is going on. Next check if you are getting power to the MPEM 5A and 15A fuses on the MPEM on the 2nd time you go to start it when you say there is no power to anything. If there is no power there you should trace power lines back to the rear black electrical box that supplies power to the MPEM. If there is power and the start button does nothing (like at least light up the gauges) then it is worth swapping MPEMs (make sure you label which key goes with each MPEM).

Yeah make spire your getting power to the MPEM through the 5 am fuse when it doesn’t start if you do then I would say it’s a MPEM problem

Ok yes unfortunately neither ski beeper works and i will dig further into this hopefully this weekend. I will try disconnecting the vts first then go from there. when i was diagnosing it the first time it did have power to both fuses and both fuses where good. I have a feeling it is the mpem, if i order a replacement mpem will i have to have it programmed to the key? Thanks for the advice and i will update as i go along.

If you get an oem one you will have to get a key programmed. Some time you can find one with a key on eBay for pretty cheap

But if you get an aftermarket MPEM do not require a programmed key. But there not a reliable ad oem but if you do get a aftermarket get the jet ski plus brand those are the only ones that’s seem to have ok reviews

Keys are programmed to an OEM MPEM. You said in your original post that either key started the problem ski the first time. Did that mean that the key from the running ski would also start the problem ski? That would indicate a probable after market MPEM which may be your problem. I would check that the problem ski has an OEM MPEM. The part number is in the parts manual online.

Update tried switching out the mpem units and now there is no power to the unit i think i might have a couple of the connectors switched due to putting it back into the good ski and hooking back up and now no power to either is there a wiring diagram for the mpem unit to which wires hook up to which i know they are color coated but some don’t match up I’ve been messing with them for hours now and can’t seem to figure it out

Also noted everything on the skis are oem i got the skis from the original owner and he said never had anything replaced except the scheduled maintenance and had two new key programmed for the skis in 2013

I will work on them tomorrow and update

Figured out what the problem was the color coded wires don’t quite match in color. I followed the wiring diagram and figured it out, i believe it is the mpem I’ve ordered a replacement from jetski plus.com for a pretty reasonable price and made in USA. I’ll put it in when it arrives and i will update, thanks for the help! Any recommendations on getting replacement grips haven’t found much on amazon, i don’t really care if they are factory or not just don’t want them melting to my hand lol. IMG_9759.jpegIMG_9760.jpeg
