96 xp fuel/oil/temp guage

i have seen posts on here before about the fuel part of the guage not working. i was wondering if i could get detailed instructions on how to clean the parts that sometimes go bad or what i should look at to try and fix it. the only wierd thing is when i put the key on it lights up as full then shuts off and nothing is on there when it is running.

If all the lights are working and just the bar graph fuel indicator isnt. The unplug the fuel gauge sending unit. Jump the 2 wires in the connector together. If the gauge read full then the sending unit is bad. Remeber the unit is 12 years old.
