I found this 1996 GTI through my neighbour whose landlord owned it but never used it. Made an offer on it and I got it for a good deal with the trailer, sub $1000. This is my first ski so I'm learning all I can about these and I'd thought I make a thread about what I'm doing with it. I don't plan on doing a full restore, just the stuff to get it in good shape and running well for the rest of the season. The ski is in running condition, but it hasn't been used in 5 years. Has the tempo lines so those are going to be the first to go, along with cleaning out the rest of the fuel system. I also learned that the fuel tank is under a safety recall so I'll be getting that done as well.

Here it was when I first went to look at it.

As you can see it's missing a mirror and the hood deflector thing. Also the first owner decided to add some handles to the side of it. Those are going to be removed and the holes patched at some point, unless I find some nice looking handles or straps I can add there.

So I brought it home and did some scrubbing, it cleaned up pretty well with minimal effort.

I have already replaced the old tempo lines with new automotive grade stuff. My lines didn't look to bad internally for the most part, I only had the green goo buildup around the brass fitting areas. I pulled the fuel selector too and took it apart for a good cleaning.

I also carbs pulled to do internal filters and clean them out.

This one was the worst of the two, not bad but not great. Cleaned it out with carb cleaner than rinsed it in soapy water.

I would double check that fuel selector. Usually once they are apart they will leak air.

So I realized I have no idea what oil this guy was running before and he doesn't remember. Not taking any chances there, so I'm going to drain the tank and engine/pump, clean the tank and replace the filter. I'm going to start running Mystik sea and snow, why you may ask? Because I can get it for $30 for a 5L jug (thats 1.3gal for you Americans), its API-TC complaint/exceeds and its low ash. Those seem to be the recommendations from Seadoo and it fits.

Got it out on the water today after having the fuel tank repaved at the dealer ! It ran like a champ aside from one small problem. If I'm idling for around 1-2 minutes after having ran it hard it will die. Restarting requires giving it a bit of gas too. Possible that I didn't clean the low speed jet well enough?

Took the head off to check the cylinder wash, can someone tell me if this looks too rich or lean or is it good?

This suggest you are a bit rich on the idle circuit.
