hey guys, i have been lurking for some time now and figured i might as well see what you guys think on this one. anyway, i have a 96 gti and it recently starting dying out at WOT, let off the throttle and it comes back. so i figured it was starving for fuel somehow. got it home and found that the fuel pump fuel filter was kinda dirty so i cleaned it out(did not have anyway to get a new one) anyway, so i cleaned it out and tested it back in the water and all seemed okay. so i rode on friday and it was running like a champ. then come saturday the same thing was happening again. so i figure that little filter has gotten clogged again. here is my plan. i bought an inline seethrough filter that i am going to put inline before the carbs so if it should filter all the crap out and let the fuel get through just fine. if it gets dirty then i dont have to take the fuel pump assembly apart every time. oh, this seems to happen after i take the fuel tank out to mess with that stuped fuel baffle so i must be stirring some crap up. what do you guys think? any suggestions? sorry for the long post

Well you could do that, or drain the tank and get rid of the crap. I would still keep the small filter in the carb so nothing gets stuck in the journals of the carb. That filter could save you from buying an expensive carb assy.

absolutely, i am still keeping everything in there. i am just adding an extra little filter inline that will be easier to change in the future. i could clean out the tank i guess. i am about out of gas would not be that difficult. i am just tired of getting out there and not really being able to play. i just end up slowly cruising around and watching everybody else. NO FUN!!

If the tank gets cleaned 1 time, you'll not have to change the clogged in line filter. If the tank is almost empty get it done and over with. Having the dirty filter stop you in the middle of playtime is no fun either.

thanks for your help and suggestions, guess i will clean that out this week. my parents are coming to visit in a couple of weeks, and dad has never ridden before, want him to get a good ride, not a slow one.

I'm sure his impression of a good running seadoo will be a better memory than a bad running one. Heck he might to ride it on his own.

hey guys, just thought i would give you an update. i replaced the little fuel filters that are in the carbs themselves (14.00 a piece) and when i went to replace the back filter i pulled it and it was completely full of stuff. almost like a pool skimmer. i am wondering how it was even running on that carb or is it possible that it wasnt running on that cylinder or something very well. anyway, i replaced both filters and installed a much easier inline filter that has replaceable cartridges inside. another question is this; when i started the ski afterwards, the inline filter would never fill up until i shut the ski off then it would fill up. will this be a problem you think or is it probably okay as long as fuel is passing throught?

It should be ok as long as the fuel is passing through. Yeks those carb filters were expensive. Were the old ones that bad that they couldn't be cleaned?

those filters were so small that it was not worth trying to clean them. i tried once but still had the same problems and since i was in there again, might as wll replace. one of the filters was so bad that cleaning was def not an option.

That's cool I have cleaned mine on my challenger couple times...thay are small and get beat up quickly. The dealers charge highway robbery!

Hello, We are having the same problem! We have a 99 seadoo challenger 1800 / 2 motors. We are only having that problem with one motor. Because I was a mechanic and found thru the years that it is an inline filter is the best way to go, it can't hurt. We are going to try that too. Let me know how it works out for you.

Welcom to the seadoo forum Kathy Cutts. It is a good thing to have members add their experienced suggestions to the posts...Good job.

what do you mean by back filters and small filters. Did you have to take the carb assembly apart? is this the inline filter you speak of?

P.S. how do you replace the inline filter without spilling gas. second, where do you get inline filters?

The filters are a big problem. Replacing tham will help a lot. You could either pinch off the line. Use vice grips couple inches above the filter, or just install the filter quickly to prevent fuel spillage. Get the fuel filter from auto zone.

Ready to dive in!

I've been lurking for a while and decided to register and ask for advice. I think my 96 GSX problem is a fuel starvation issue on one of the carbs and probably from the internal filter that you speak of in this thread. How challenging is it to get into this carb and remove/clean/reinstall these filters? Is it necessary to tear down the carburetor (to get to this filter) resulting in the need to purchase a rebuild kit?

I also need to drain and flush my fuel tank, replace gray lines, (suggestions for other commonly done stuff are welcome b/c I AM A NUBIE).

Best Regards,

I read the how-to section and found very helpful info. I guess I need to purchase a rebuilt kit or at least some of the gaskets.

Thanks.
