96 gti dies when you hit a wave.

Ok so you might know my 96 gti blew up the other day but i want to start thinking about and addressing this issue before i get my new motor in. Every time i hit a big wake 3ft or so, the thing would just shut off like it looses fuel for a second or something, but always would turn right back on (before it blew up:not-amused:). Id like to know what the possibilities are for causing it before its all back together witha new motor and probably doing it again.. all the ground connections were good. It does have a aftermarket mpem in it from ebay, and different dess post and key that came with it.. so where can i begin to look?

Sounds like something that is designed to move some, moves a lot on impact. Maybe an unstable rave valve? (following) .... Just curious though, did you maintain throttle in the air?

Its a 720 motor, has no rave valves. And yes weather i hold it wide open or half or none when it smacks down it jus makes a sorry attempt at staying running for a moment and then shuts off and then like said starts right back up no problem. (Or it did, before it toasted the motor lol)

I can’t give you a full reply,,,but I recall a thread couple years ago,,,similar symptom,,,turned out to be a momentary carb starvation issue,,,not sure if the anti-symphony valve or the pump diaphragms were involved,,

Hmmm i had an inline fuel filter on it which i know now that its a nono, maybe that had something to do with it? But im sorry an anti what valve lmao, does mine have that cause ive never heard of it? And well the carbs were rebuilt with genuine mikuni parts and were absolutely flawless in the way the throttle always responded, in fact i have ridden many other carbed skis and idk why but they always felt like sputtery trash compared to mine..

Sounds like an electrical issue. Hitting a wave could momentarily break a connection.

I would check all connections and grounds.

I will do, i have another question. I inspected my rotary valve and cover and its quite grooved out it would catch my nail in some spots and possibly out of spec, yet i never really had any problems with it starting? Anyways i had another cover laying around and checked the gap according to the manual and its in range and not near as grooved out but im considering replacing my valve since its a little scratched and assume its worn. So if i do is it a 159 or 147? Sbt and titan sell them both and say they are both for my seadoo 96 717 gti. How can i tell or know what its supposed to have if it says both? Do i even need to replace it if its just lightly scratched? I can feel them but they dont hang my nail.

1996 GTI uses a 159 degree valve and only a 159 degree valve.

Typically they don't need to be replaced unless they have mechanical damage on them.

Thank you! Im not sure why they list them both as a fit but i will go with what you said. Mine seems okay not bent or gouged out

Update for anyone who cares or possibly someone in the future: new motor installed, rebuilt oem starter, went through all the connections, new push start button. Still died from waves, still clicked no start sometimes even with rebuild starter and new solenoid. Also it would even sometimes do nothing when pressing the start button, and would have to unplug the battery and replug it before it would do anything. Long story short i recently got a parts ski, took the whole grey box, rewired my ski, had my old key programmed to the new box for 60$ and everything works perfectly. So another case of crazy electrical problems just due to a cheapo garbage aftermarket mpem. NEVER BUY AN AFTERMARKET.

Thank you for the update.
And I agree with the aftermarket crap, unfortunately the OEM stuff is getting harder and harder to find.

It sure is, i will start collecting parts from jetski junkyards as i have quite a few near me and usually the people that own them are alot more reasonable compared to the people on ebay. Wanting 300$+ for a 26 year old mpem with no guarantee that it works..
