anybody replaced there starter ?

looks to me like it's buried under the carbs (big black box).....

do i remove the box to get to it and can an auto parts store bench test it ?

i get a loud click from the solenoid when hitting the start button but nothing more...

so called experts from the auto parts store say my starter is not engaging....

any ideas ?

thanks:stupid:

Yes, you will have to remove the black air box on top of the carbs to reach the starter.

But you should open the ignition box and clean/check the terminals to the solenoid itself. If they are corroded or loose, then you have a bad connection that makes it hard to crank.

starter versus solenoid 96 gsx

does that loud click when hitting the start button indicate a bad starter or maybe just a bad solenoid

thanks for the pics, this looks fairly easy now.....to get the starter out, but i'm wondering if i should throw a new solenoid in it...... the dealer says 54.00

is that a good price for solenoids

I just had a starting problem with my 1997 GSX. Check out my thread that is going on right now. It's tittled "1997 seadoo GSX won't start." I cleaned up all the connections on the solenoid with a Dremel rotory tool and got my solenoid working. I also gave it a few good taps with the handle of a screw driver. Everything checks out now. Headed for the lake this weekend!

And you could always jump the solenoid with a screwdriver. That'll let you know if the starter runs or not instead of making assumptions based on the solenoid.
