Hey guys and gals, I'm new to this site all the way from corner brook, newfoundland, Canada . So I purchased my first pwc. A 96 800xp that just had two new pistons and a cylinder done, new starter, new carb kits, new carbon ring. Machine is in excellent shape. However I'm getting no power. I put the dess key on and nothing happens. Cross the solenoid and it spins over. When I press the start button the dash is supposed to light up for 30 seconds...not mine. Nothing. fuses are good, I check the start switch and it has continuity, I checked the dess post according to the Manuel. Open circuit when off and continuity when on. My local brp dealer is useless however they did call and say they found a mpem on the shelf while doing inventory however when I checked it there was a gray wire coming out of the center by the purple and the black with yellow stripe. They couldn't tell me how to wire it in and said they were not able to program my key for it. I have checked every connection and I'm about to put it all back together now to see if magically I may have cleaned something that's fixes it lol wishful thinking I'd say. Just like to get it running don't care if I have to by pass shit or get it proper. I'm $2000 in now and it's a sin to burn it in the front yard lol getting frustrated now so any help would be very much appreciated. I see lots of mpems on ebay but all wiring is different and not sure if any come with a wiring diagram. I'm on fb as Ted brake. And 7096601857 is my number if there is anyone out there that can help me please. There is special spot in heaven if you do lol ;) ;) the pictures show my mpem in the electrical box and the new mpem with the extra gray wire. Other wise I may havea parts sale ;)

1st, are those carb kits Genuine Mikuni because the package in your picture sure doesn't look like it.
2nd. Did you connect the small little black ground wire to the battery at the rear electrical box?

Thanks for you reply. :) They probably aren't but that's the least of my worries. Lol The carbs looked great actually. In the package there are more parts than I needs but it all seemed good. Just gaskets no jets. And yes I did hook the small ground up. I'm here at it in the shed now still

So I checked more connections. Cleaned up everything that I could see. Now when I put the fob key on the relay in the front electrical box clicks twice and light come on it the dash for a couple seconds. I have 12.78 volts at the MPEM. When I press the start button the relay in the front clicks twice again but no start. Without the fob key on if you press the start button some of the dash lights light up and stay on for 33 seconds. If I cross out the solenoid in the rear ut winds over but no spark. A little better lol before I was getting nothing. Any more suggestions. Thanks again in advance.

Does the beeper work when you put the key on the post? It sounds like it behaves normally pressing the start button without the key but shuts off too quickly when you put the key on (should stay on for the same 33 seconds). If the beeper is defective, the MPEM might be trying to send an error code that might indicate what the issue is.

The beeper does not sound but I believe the beeper is between the handle bars and I hooked it up to power direct and got nothing either. The dash lights stay on for 33 seconds without the key on when you press the start button.

It is under the cover of the handlebars.. You can replace it with any piezoelectric beeper that runs off of 12 V DC it's DC for test purposes. There is info on the forum on how to order an original one.

The OEM beepers are still available directly from Floyd Bell. Part number SP-1136 the last time I bought them was May 2020 and they were $17.38 each.

Actually I just went out and gave it a couple wacks with the screw driver. Now when I put the fob on it beeps once. I think it's supposed to sound twice normally. And the relay in the front electrical box, not the solenoid that's in the rear box, clicks twice sort of like it clicks on then off. Is there something about pressing the start button 5 times? And with the fob on or off.
At least something is happening now lol before I was getting nothing. All I've really done is check connections and clean up anything I see

But still not turning over to start. Not putting power across to the second post on the solenoid in the rear electrical box..again if you cross it out it winds over but no spark

Only 1 beep means it doesn't recognize the lanyard and will not start.
So in your experience would it seem I have MPEM trouble, or for some reason maybe just see if i can get it programmed to the key. I have two and same with both. This machine has been taken apart for about 13 years and I just assembled it all back together. Would it loose the program from before for some reason?? From what I hear I hope I don't have MPEM trouble because no one around here wants to try to program not even the brp dealer. One place has a can pro and says it's hit or miss sometimes it works sometimes it don't but would try for half hour labor charge at the least

It is typically a post or key issue but you can't rule out the MPEM. I know you already have but I would check and clean all connections again including the lanyard and post metal parts.

Before I threw a new MPEM in I would send it and the lanyard to Westside Powersports Seadoo. His services aren't cheap but he can check it and is honest. I would not waste money on an aftermarket MPEM either.

I'll do that..I'll go through every connection again and see what happens. Thanks. Will reply back when I do

My local brp dealer called me yesterday saying they were doing inventory and found an MPEM for a 96 800 xp. They said it was a number change but it supersedes the original. I went and looked at it and it has one gray wire in the center that mine don't and they couldn't give me any information as to why or where it would go. I told them to hold on to it for me . Lol just in case. I'll post a pic to show the difference

If I needed the MPEM from brp ( if it's good to me) they said $490 plus tax but it's genuine. I should maybe pick it up if I could find out if it was for sure good to me with the extra gray wire..if I don't need it someone will. If not it'll be lost in old stock

hey the 96 gsx has a gray signal wire to the tach. you might check his part number to the gsx parts list. from what I have read it should still work for you. If you buy it I would hook up a tach and get rid of the speedo. which is what I 'm about to do next week, only wiring to the mag coil wire. trw

Thanks I'll check on that part number. That would be great if it is a tach wire. Actually another guy said the same thing

While I don’t have anything to offer, I too was about to burn my XP in my front yard too. I really wanted it to fall off the trailer and and roll into a deep ravine and never be found again.

Took me 18 months to figure mine out, and hundreds of dollars in parts. Damn voltage regulator……at least that was one of the problems.

I hear ya. Ha ha. And electrical isn't my thing either. Got the power trim motor working today anyways..still no start.

I did not read where you performed the electrical test on the DESS wires (black and black/yellow wires should read close to 0 ohms with the key on the post. If you are getting some resistance, the post may be beginning to fail and the MPEM might not be able to read the key correctly. If you see some resistance, tap the post with a screwdriver and see if it changes. Changing the post will be far easier, cheaper and take less time and effort locating one than an MPEM.

I didn’t see if you replaced the starter solenoid or not. Had a customer seadoo that allowed water into the rear electrical box and rusted the inside of solenoid causing all sort of issues. Couldn’t tell by looking at it though. I could jump the solenoid and would turn over but nothing when using the start button.
In my particular case, them MPEM connection inside the solenoid was bad and not sending power to the MPEM. It appears it’s not exactly your problem but worth a shot for $20. Better than $500. I did all the connectors and post/DESS key, start button, new MPEM, and all that crap before I figured it out.

When I say “customer”, that doesn’t mean I am a Seadoo expert. More like a volunteered to get a couple going for a guy. Still don’t understand why I told the guy I’d look at them. My mouth got ahead of my brain.
