Last night I finally got my xp's motor running again after a full top end rebuild. I pulled it out and hooked it to the hose this afternoon to try to tune the carb a bit. I guess after the carb rebuild I didn't turn the idle screw back in all the way. So I cranked it up and the engine raced up to excessive RPMs. the lanyard got pulled after maybe 3 seconds, but just before it got pulled there was a reasonably loud bang. the engine cut off and I looked in to find this.

Does anyone have any idea what the hell happened here? I have virtually rebuilt the entire ski excluding the pump because it seemed to be in good shape.

I looked through the manual and don't see mention of any kind of bearing or carrier that should be sitting in that little fiberglass ring, but does this mean my hull is dead?

Not sure what caused it but u can fix it by gluing in a piece of pvc. I fixed a 94 Gtx this way. You will need a new beliows. Check that your bearing didn’t freeze up on your driveshaft. You will have to pull the pump and driveshaft.

Not sure on the size but I used a piece that just fit inside the broken piece. Easy cheap fix.

Also no point to tuning a carb out of the water as it won’t do anything without a load.

Set the screws to factory settings and the idle to 3,000, that’s about all you can do out of the water.

Thank all of you for your input. It was super relieving to hear that my hull is going to be salvageable. Especially after the gelcoting the entire Bottom half.

I have purchased the driveline repair kit from osd as well as a jet pump rebuild kit. It should all be here by next so I'll let you guys know how turns out.

Miki - that's basically all I was trying to do was get the idle to 3k before we put it in the water. Of course I was thinking I was gonna set the idle and have it in the water by the end of the day. Everytime I think I've got this thing finished something else pops up. Fortunately this is legitimately the last thing to rebuild in the ski. Besides the bottom end of the motor this thing will be all brand new, lol.

I have not done a search but figured I'd go ahead and ask. What is the process of removing the old hull insert? Is there a thread pertaining to this?
