For those who have put a second battery in their Challenger 2000, where did you locate the new battery? I have been looking at the options, and the best spot I can come up with is beside the starboard muffler below/aft of the original battery on the floor of the engine compartment. Any other options people have come up with?

Thanks! I had missed that one somehow; mainly looking in the Modify section I guess. I was thinking about putting my second battery in the same location as he did, but on the other side to avoid the long cable runs. Quick question; has anyone used a LifePo battery as their number 2? They are big in power sports, and starting to make inroads in experimental aviation, which I'm also involved with. A LifePo battery is very small and weighs about 3 lbs, so they have obvious advantages; just wondering if anyone has been using them in boats.

Generally speaking you should try and run same age type of battery. One can siphon off other battery.

Understood. Just curious as to whether this battery chemistry is finding application in boats. One more question; I have been looking primarily at buying a group 24 deep cycle battery as my house battery, mainly because that's what the starting battery is, and that's the easiest size to accommodate elsewhere. Just wondering if anyone has used a group 27 or 29 deep cycle as their second battery; the larger sizes certainly have greater capacity, which would give them some advantages. Are there any problems associated with using different sized batteries in the two banks?

Adding a larger size is fine, just stick with the same Type of chemistry. Meaning don't mix an AGM (absorbent glass mat) with a lead-acid battery. If your current is L-A, get an L-A.

^ correct! Are you trying to get reserve capacity for audio system? I own a car stereo shop and have a little knowledge on electrical stuff! (:

Yes, that's the reason for the mod. I don't have a high power stereo, mind you; I know its sacrilege to serious audio freaks, but I'm just running off the head unit with 4 6 1/2" speakers, so I don't have a serious power draw. I just want to be able to listen to the radio or music either on the beach or out on the water and not have to worry about having enough juice to start the boat again after. No plans for amps, subs, etc.

Check out Wetsounds bluetooth volume knob. Pretty cool. Basic system like that will run 3 or 4 hours on one battery. The new marine JL audio micro power pack will triple your audio output for cheap. Using 4 JL audio marine 7.7 inch speakers is actually really really impressive output sitting in a bath tub! (;
