Hello folks,

After winter started up my boat on started running rough. I splashed her down but after aa few mintues running one of the cylinders started missing then would run fine then stop again. Took the plugs out and noticed some light oil fowling. I took off the intake hose and found fresh oil sitting in it. Not a lot. Ive traced il back up the intake linee and am thinking it the TOPS solenoid. I don't think its coming from the supercharger which has very few hours of use on this reconditioned unit. I don't think it would blow back oil that far under negative pressure.

Not sure if my theory is solid. There are no warning lights, though if i hit the gas hard i can trip a check engine light until next engine restart. For info i rebuilt the engine 3 seasons ago replacing front and rear oil pumps but reusing the solenoids. I see from other posts people by pass the TOPS in boats.

Any toughts on trouble shooting?

Thanks

I am not sure about the 2004 model but the tops has the blow-by valve in it. Essentially it is a oil separator to allow blow-by vapor to be put back into the intake.

Mine is a 2011 there is always a little oil present in the intake from this process. If there is alot, the blow-by valve may be failed.

If the SC was leaking oil it would be present past the SC on the intake.

How old are your plugs?

I havent checked the intake before this so maybe the oil I'm seeing is 'normal'. Its probability a few cc's. Enough to see a liitle pool of it to get the end of my finger wet. Plugs are only 2 seasons old and look good, but I'll change them to be sure however.

Yes there is some oil misting past the SC side but not that much. Probably due to miss firing or not running on all cylinders.
It could be a coil pack failing of course, though i would expect them to just fail and not be intermittent like this. I havent run the engine long maybe 5mins before the problem starts.

I can tell you I had a bad coil before and the symptom was a stutter or misfire above 3500 RPMS. It also didn't happen all the time.

You should replace the plugs each season. They are cheap and the boats are hard on them.

I hope changing the plugs is the easy button. I'll let you know how I get on.
Appriciate the feedback. Now if it would just stop raining...

Well, I removed and cleaned out the air intake tubes of excess oil, and took a blow torch to the plugs to clean them up of oil residue. Started her up with air intake tubes removed from the bypass line to the SC. let the SC draw straight in. Listened for the TOPS solenoid which sounded like it was functioning as designed when adding DESS key. She ran fine and there was no indication of bypass oil entering. Put all the lines back on.

Installed a new set of plugs.. Re-ran on the trailer for another 5 or so minutes. No missing. Splashed her down and drove the 3km from the slip to her boat lift. Ran like a top.
The only thing I can think of was a bypass caused by possible overfilling? Gotta find a better oil extractor. Now, if Lake Superior would just warm up... damn cold this year.

Looking for a used wake tower to fit my boat if anyone hears of one.

Thanks for the incouragement and feedback MacSeadoo! I'll rebuild the SC at the end of the season. That should be fun haha..
