2002 Utopia 185 - No Spark! 210 Carb M2 Sport Jet

OK, so I've gotten to the point that I'm checking for spark, but am now having issues. Turn the key, one beep. Starter cranks the flywheel. Occasionally get a beep while cranking. No spark on any cylinder.

  • Kill switch is not present. Black / yellow wires are unplugged at the ECM and engine harness.
  • Just replaced the trigger coil with an Amazon replacement unit that had the same wires, all appears to be wired correctly.
  • Also replaced the voltage regulator, but to rule it out have both yellow connectors unplugged.
  • It's worth noting that there is no fuel tank or oil fill tank present. I have them removed for clearance, and as I was deep cleaning.
  • No gauges are connected.
  • Previous owner rewired the ignition switch and replaced with a different unit.
My next thought is neutral position switch. Beyond that I'm really not sure where to look. Wiring otherwise looks OK. Any ideas?

Kill switch- I presume you mean it has been bypassed. Suspect.

Key switch- a starting point. You will need to trace and test all the wires from the switch.

Neutral interlock switch- I believe it prevents cranking. 2 very small wires at the throttle/shift. Magnetic switch.

Try reconnecting the black/yellow wire. May need to trace. Start just aft of flywheel.

Ground wires- there are several. Including one to the plate that holds the ignition coils. Both ends of each ground wire should be clean. Sometimes a wire may break inside the insulation with no visible damage.

It was removed by the previous owner, but I bought a replacement on Amazon that I've yet to hook up. That said, if the safety kill switch has been unplugged at the motor, it shouldn't matter whether it's present, right?

Agreed. I wish I had a pin out or diagram for this, but I can't seem to find one. The diagram in the user manual doesn't include the ignition switch.

I learned this by removing it and testing. As it's a two wire switch, and removing it causes the failure condition that prevents cranking, I'm assuming it can't be responsible for a no spark condition while allowing the boat to crank. Using this logic I've ruled it out.

This is my plan; to reinstall the kill switch and hook it back up, then test to see if there is any change in the circuit when the kill switch is ON vs OFF.

I am going to check continuity between all grounds next. I did a pretty good job of cleaning up the ones I could see, but I'm going to go over it with a fine toothed comb.


I could REALLY use a diagram for that ignition switch...
