Looking at purchasing my first ski, 2002 Seadoo GTX RFI. I have looked all over the web for reviews on this model and haven't come up with much. Engine compression is good, 150/160. Seller is asking 3K for the ski and trailer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

WATER TEST anything BEFORE you buy.
How many hours?
Correct oil used? (XPS-2)

RFI's work well.... when they work. If they fail they are harder / more $ to fix than a carb ski. not saying it will, just saying repair costs are higher.

ALSO.

WATER TEST. running it on land is the equivalent of testing a car in Park. Don't bother. WATER TEST.

Assuming that's a 951 engine, it should hit 55-60 WOT on the speedo (if working). and 6,500 to 7,000 RPM wide open.

Thanks Sabr-
The ski has 82 hours on new engine. I will be water testing prior to purchase, ski is currently owned by a family friend. I know it has been looked after well, the original owner has a repair facility in town and did the maintenance on it. I am most concerned with overall reliability on these units, I know I've read a lot of posts warning to stay away from the DI engines.

I've had my 99 rfi for a couple months now and its been pretty good so far. 150 compression is good. Water test needs to be done like others have said. It will have a 787 engine in it, not a 947. It should do 7K rpm and ~50-55 mph.

RFI's have a problem with the regulators/rectifiers, I'm not sure if they fixed it in later years. Might be good to take voltage multimeter and check voltage at battery when running. Should read between 13-14 volts. If its 15v or above its bad.

Also, see what kind of maintanance has been done on it. Stuff like changing oil injection lines, checking impeller clearance, filling impeller cone with oil, etc.

$3000 seems a little high, i'd try to talk him down a little. KBB is 2990 for suggested retail value without trailer. Used single trailers runs around 200-400. However, I'd remind the buyer that that price is from a dealer, who will normally with go through the craft and inpect alot more than a normal person.

Have an 02 GTX RFI. Bought the ski 3 years ago. 2 years ago replaced the voltage regulator/rectifier and stator. At that time I wanted to check the stator for metal shavings so I didn't screw up a new regulator/rectifier. Since I had the front cover off I replaced the stator as a precaution. When it runs it runs great. I'm currently trying to track down a 12V Low message issue.

Had a 96 GTX 787 carb'd and the 02 GTX RFI at the same time. Both top out between 50-55. RFI uses less fuel & easier to start. The asking price is the going price for private sales in my area with the trailer.
